چکیده

General comments This paper provides estimates of the carbon balance of Russia based on three forms of measurement (inventory [LEA], eddy covariance and atmospheric inversion. Calculations are also presented for 8 DGVMs but these are not used in providing the final overall estimate of the net carbon balance. Each of these has quite different properties and different levels of uncertainty. The inventory approach gathers together a very diverse set of ground-based measurements covering many aspects of vegetation and soil, supported by some remote sensing information. The diversity of these measurements and lack of information in the paper on their individual properties (number, period and location of measurements, selection bias, methodology, known limitations) makes it hard to judge the uncertainty in the individual components. Interactive comment on “Modelling the climatic drivers determining photosynthesis and carbon allocation in evergreen Mediterranean forests

General comment The paper of Gea-Izquierdo et al. is an interesting exercise of calibrating a process-based model to forecast uptake and allocation of carbon by using a combination of eddy covariance CO2 flux data, dendrochronological time series of secondary growth and forest inventory data as raw data. I recognize process-based models are very complex, and of difficult implementation because ...

Interactive comment on “Methane dynamics in warming tundra of Northeast European Russia” by M. E. Marushchak et al

This manuscript presents valuable data on CH4 fluxes from the understudied permafrost region of NE Europe. CH4 fluxes were measured on the plot scale by closed chambers and on the landscape scale by the eddy covariance approach. The combination of these two approaches is a particular strength of this study. Furthermore, the authors present interesting data on stable carbon signatures of pore wa...

Estimating daytime CO2 fluxes over a mixed forest from tall tower mixing ratio measurements

[1] Difficulties in estimating terrestrial ecosystem CO2 fluxes on regional scales have significantly limited our understanding of the global carbon cycle. This paper presents an effort to estimate daytime CO2 fluxes over a forested region on the scale of 50 km in northern Wisconsin, USA, using the tall-tower-based mixed layer (ML) budget method. Budget calculations were conducted for 2 years u...

Understanding of Coupled Terrestrial Carbon, Nitrogen and Water Dynamics—An Overview

Coupled terrestrial carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and hydrological processes play a crucial role in the climate system, providing both positive and negative feedbacks to climate change. In this review we summarize published research results to gain an increased understanding of the dynamics between vegetation and atmosphere processes. A variety of methods, including monitoring (e.g., eddy covariance...
