Multiple Representation of Japanese Complex Predicates : A Lexicalist Analysis of Subject and Object Honorific Forms

چکیده

Lexicalist approaches to syntax can benefit from multidimensionality of representation as exhibited by Ailohanan(1997). Subject and object honorific forms in Japanese are shown to be complex predicates with its second component grammaticalized and triggering argument-sharing of the two components of the predicate. Multidimensional representation makes it possible to account for the Gricean inference mechanism working during the argument-sharing process of these honorific forms.

Toward a Unified Analysis of the Scope Interpretation of Complex Predicates in Japanese: Evidence from the Light Verb Construction

In this paper, I first make an observation that there is a certain parallelism in the scope interpretation possibilities of adverbs and quantifiers with respect to different types complex predicates in Japanese, drawing on a comparison of the light verb construction and the causative construction. I will then argue that previous approaches to complex predicates in Japanese in the lexicalist tra...

An Event-Based Interpretation of Japanese Honorific Constructions Using RRG Operators

The contemporary Japanese verbal honorific constructions can be motivated in view of the RRG clausal organization and its operator hierarchy. I will present an analysis of the subject honorific construction based on a functional analysis of existential and copulative verbs, and relate it to adjectival verbs. I will also sketch a possible origin of the non-subject honorific construction.

Honorific marking: Interpreted and Interpretable

Japanese, Korean, and Thai provide yet more extensive and articulated honorification paradigms, with a range of special formal, familiar, and derogatory pronominal forms, as well as verb forms and others. This extra dimension in the pronominal system separates these languages from, e.g., English and Arabic, where the pronominal paradigms make no such distinction. But it is evident that, in natu...

The Interlanguage of Persian Learners of Italian: a Focus on Complex Predicates

This paper aims at investigating the acquisition of Italian complex predicates by native speakers of Persian. Complex predication is not as pervasive a phenomenon in Italian as it is in Persian. Yet Italian native speakers use complex predicates productively; spontaneous data show that Persian learners of Italian seem to be perfectly aware of Italian complex predicates and use this familiar fea...
