چکیده

Packet reordering has now become one of the most significant bottlenecks in next-generation switch designs. In this paper, we argue that current packet order requirements for switches are too stringent, with little or no reason. Instead of requiring all packets sharing the same switch input and switch output to be ordered, we only require packets that share the same source and destination IP addresses to be ordered. We then exploit this new definition by suggesting several hash-based counter schemes that prevent inter-flow blocking and reduce reordering delay. The schemes are transparent to the routing scheme. We further suggest schemes based on network coding to protect against rare events with high queueing delay. We also point out an inherent reordering delay unfairness between elephants and mice, and introduce several mechanisms to correct this unfairness. Last, we demonstrate using both analysis and simulations that the use of these solutions can indeed reduce the resequencing delay. For instance, resequencing delays are reduced by up to a factor of 10 using real-life traces and a real hashing function.

Statistical Analysis, for Reducing the Energy Dissipation in a Bus-switch Encoder

The Bus Switch mechanism is a recently proposed bus encoding technique for low-power off-chip data buses. The approach is based on clustering, reordering and encoding the bus input lines according to a reordering pattern and a fixed coding function. This work presents a statistical approach for reducing the hardware overhead of the bus switch technique, by operating with a sub-set of the possib...

Soft Dependency Constraints for Reordering in Hierarchical Phrase-Based Translation

Long-distance reordering remains one of the biggest challenges facing machine translation. We derive soft constraints from the source dependency parsing to directly address the reordering problem for the hierarchical phrasebased model. Our approach significantly improves Chinese–English machine translation on a large-scale task by 0.84 BLEU points on average. Moreover, when we switch the tuning...

Reorder Density (RD): A Formal, Comprehensive Metric for Packet Reordering

The increase in link speeds, increased parallelism within routers and switches, QoS support and load balancing among links, all point to future networks with increased packet reordering. Unchecked, packet reordering will have a significant detrimental effect on the end-to-end performance, while resources required for dealing with packet reordering at routers and end-nodes will grow considerably...

Parallel matching algorithm for CIOQ switches with multiple traffic classes - Communications, IEE Proceedings-

It has recently been shown that a combined input and output queued (CIOQ) switch with a speed-up factor of 2 can exactly emulate an output-queued (OQ) switch. The main benefit of using a CIOQ switch is to reduce memory bandwidth requirement while providing quality of service (QoS) guarantee. The key component for exact emulation is a matching algorithm for bipartite graphs. For example, a CIOQ ...

Low Power Bus Binding Based on Dynamic Bit Reordering

In this paper, the problem of reducing switching activity in on-chip buses at the stage of high-level synthesis is considered, and a high-level low power bus binding based on dynamic bit reordering is proposed. Whereas conventional methods use a fixed bit ordering between variables within a bus, the proposed method switches a bit ordering dynamically to obtain a switching activity reduction. As...
