Scintillation in the Circinus Galaxy H2O megamasers

چکیده
We present observations of the 22 GHz water vapor megamasers in the Circinus galaxy made with the Tidbinbilla 70 m telescope. These observations confirm the rapid variability seen earlier by Greenhill et al. (1997). We show that this rapid variability can be explained by interstellar scintillation, based on what is now known of the interstellar scintillation seen in a significant number of flat spectrum AGN. The observed variability cannot be fully described by a simple model of either weak or diffractive scintillation. The Discovery of H2O Maser Emission in Seven AGN and at High Velocities in the Circinus Galaxy
We report the discovery of H2O maser emission at 1.35 cm wavelength in seven active galactic nuclei (at distances up to < 80 Mpc) during a survey conducted at the 70-m diameter antenna of the NASA Deep Space Network near Canberra, Australia. The detection rate was ∼ 4%. Two of the maser sources are particularly interesting because they display satellite high-velocity emission lines, which are a...
متن کاملExtremely Rapid Variations of Water Maser Emission from the Circinus Galaxy
The water maser lines in the Seyfert nucleus of the Circinus galaxy vary on time scales as short as a few minutes. The amplitude of one line more than doubled in ≈ 10 minutes, reaching ≈ 37 Jy, which corresponded to an increase of ≈ 6 L⊙, assuming isotropic emission, in a single maser feature on a size scale of about 1 AU, based on light-travel time. Other lines vary by up to about 30% on simil...
متن کاملNew H2O masers in Seyfert and FIR bright galaxies
Using the Effelsberg 100-m telescope, detections of four extragalactic water vapor masers are reported. Isotropic luminosities are ∼50, 1000, 1, and 230 L⊙ for Mrk 1066 (UGC 2456), Mrk 34, NGC 3556, and Arp 299, respectively. Mrk 34 contains by far the most distant and one of the most luminous water vapor megamasers so far reported in a Seyfert galaxy. The interacting system Arp 299 appears to ...
متن کاملGreen Bank Telescope Observations of the Water Masers of Ngc 3079: Accretion Disk Magnetic Field and Maser Scintillation
We present observations of the 22 GHz H2O megamasers in the circumnuclear disk of NGC 3079 obtained with the Green Bank Telescope. The data are analyzed for circular polarization due to the Zeeman-induced splitting of the H2O maser lines. No circular polarization is detected and we derive a 1σ upper limit of 11 mG for the toroidal magnetic field at ∼ 0.64 pc from the central black hole. This is...
متن کاملExtragalactic H2O masers and X-ray absorbing column densities
Having conducted a search for the λ∼1.3 cm (22GHz) water vapor line towards galaxies with nuclear activity, large nuclear column densities or high infrared luminosities, we present H2O spectra for NGC2273, UGC5101, and NGC3393 with isotropic luminosities of 7, 1500, and 400 L⊙. The H2O maser in UGC5101 is by far the most luminous yet found in an ultraluminous infrared galaxy. NGC3393 reveals th...
