Event Structure, Unaccusativity, and Locative Inversion

چکیده

This paper attempts to account for why Chinese locative inversion exhibits crosslinguistically peculiar distributional properties. I argue that the attested crosslinguistic differences are attributed to the differences in the way the socalled “state subevent condition” (Nakajima 2001) is satisfied. Specifically, I claim that it is an operation on the event structure that allows certain nonpassivized transitive verbs to meet the condition. The analysis also receives crosslinguistic support from the Japanese -te aru construction.

Optimality-Theoretic Lexical Mapping Theory: A Case Study of Locative Inversion

Locative inversion verbs seem to share the same argument structure and grammatical function assignment (i.e., ) cross-linguistically. This article discusses the nature of argument-function linking in LFG and demonstrates how the Lexical Mapping Theory (LMT) rendered in Optimality-Theoretic (OT) terms, where argument-function linking is governed by universal violable constraints...

L2 Acquisition of Chinese Locative Inversion

Locative inversion is a non-canonical structure in Chinese and English. According to the Contrastive Analysis theory (Lado, 1957), a structure in L2 is easier to learn if it has the same meaning and distribution as an “equivalent” in L1. Previous studies suggest that English-speaking Chinese L2 learners would have no difficulty in acquiring the unmarked construction (Jin, 2008). The present stu...

Existential Sentences, Be, and the Genitive of Negation in Russian

The Genitive of Negation (Gen Neg) in Russian involves alternation of Genitive with Nominative or Accusative under conditions which have been debated for many decades. What gives the construction its name is that Gen Neg occurs only under sentential negation; other allegedly crucial factors include topic-focus structure, unaccusativity, perspectival structure, the lexical semantics of the verb,...

Locative Inversion and Aspect Markers le and zhe in Mandarin Chinese

Bresnan (1994), based on data in English and Chicheŵa, proposes that the discourse function of locative inversion construction (LIC) is presentational focus, in which the referent of the NP ‘is introduced or reintroduced on the (part of the) scene referred to by the preposed locative’. Pan (1996) suggests that the discourse function of LIC in Chinese is the same. In this paper, I investigate tw...

Beyond Telicity and Affected-Theme : Semantic Factors Contributing to the Resultative Interpretation of Predicates in Japanese

This paper discusses semantic factors contributing to the resultative interpretation of predicates in the Japanese te-ir construction. The construction ambiguously takes on either progressive or resultative meanings. This ambiguity is due to the lexical meaning of the verb, and it is the purpose of this paper to single out and characterize the classes of verbs which take on the resultative mean...
