The JPEG compression leaves unique fingerprints and serves as a “fragile watermark” enabling us to detect changes as small as modifying the LSB of one randomly chosen pixel. The detection of changes is based on investigating the compatibility of 8×8 blocks of pixels with JPEG compression with a given quantization matrix. The proposed steganalytic method is applicable to virtually all steganographic and watermarking algorithms with the exception of those that embed message bits into the quantized JPEG DCT coefficients. The method can also be used to estimate the size of the secret message and identify the pixels that carry message bits. As a consequence of our steganalysis, we strongly recommend avoiding using images that have been originally stored in the JPEG format as cover-images for spatial-domain steganography.

JPEG-Compatibility Steganalysis Using Block-Histogram of Recompression Artifacts

JPEG-compatibility steganalysis detects the presence of embedding changes using the fact that the stego image was previously JPEG compressed. Following the previous art, we work with the difference between the stego image and an estimate of the cover image obtained by recompression with a JPEG quantization table estimated from the stego image. To better distinguish recompression artifacts from ...

Steganography and steganalysis of digital images is a catand-mouse game. In recent work, Fridrich, Goljan and Du introduced a method that is surprisingly accurate at determining if bitmap images that originated as JPEG les have b en altered (and even specifying where and how they were altered), even if only a single bit has been changed. However, steganographic embeddings that encode embedded d...

Practical steganalysis of digital images: state of the art

Steganography is the art of hiding the very presence of communication by embedding secret messages into innocuous looking cover documents, such as digital images. Detection of steganography, estimation of message length, and its extraction belong to the field of steganalysis. Steganalysis has recently received a great deal of attention both from law enforcement and the media. In our paper, we c...

Steganalysis of Colored JPEG Images

Images, especially colored JPEG images, are increasingly being used as cover by many steganography techniques. Steganalysis detects the presence of message embedded by steganography techniques. Many authors have given different steganalysis techniques which differ mainly on the feature sets being used. In this paper we are comparing feature sets of six of these steganalysis techniques for multi...

Hide and Seek in JPEG Images

Recently, the JPEG images are the most common format for storing images. JPEG images are very abundant on the Internet bulletin boards and public Internet sites. So it attracted the attention of researchers as the main steganographic format. There are many new and powerful steganography and steganalysis techniques in JPEG images reported in the literature, in the last few years. In this paper, ...
