Competitiveness via Doubling

It is not easy to formulate a precise, yet also general and elegant description of this method. In this expositary paper, we illustrate this method by discussing several applications where doubling is used, and these examples should be sufficient to elucidate the underlying idea. (This is not meant to be a comprehensive survey; we suspect that there are many more examples of doubling-based approximation algorithms in the literature.)
