Steady-state Bifurcation with Euclidean Symmetry

چکیده
We consider systems of partial differential equations equivariant under the Euclidean group E(n) and undergoing steady-state bifurcation (with nonzero critical wavenumber) from a fully symmetric equilibrium. A rigorous reduction procedure is presented that leads locally to an optimally small system of equations. In particular, when n = 1 and n = 2 and for reaction-diffusion equations with general n, reduction leads to a single equation. (Our results are valid generically, with perturbations consisting of relatively bounded partial differential operators.) In analogy with equivariant bifurcation theory for compact groups, we give a classification of the different types of reduced systems in terms of the absolutely irreducible unitary representations of E(n). The representation theory of E(n) is driven by the irreducible representations of O(n − 1). For n = 1, this constitutes a mathematical statement of the ‘universality’ of the GinzburgLandau equation on the line. (In recent work, we addressed the validity of this equation using related techniques.) When n = 2, there are precisely two significantly different types of reduced equation: scalar and pseudoscalar, corresponding to the trivial and nontrivial one-dimensional representations of O(1). There are infinitely many possibilities for each n ≥ 3.

Secondary Hopf Bifurcation Caused by Steady-state Steady-state Mode Interaction
In two-parameter systems with symmetry two steady state bifurcation points of diierent symmetry types coalesce generically within one point. Under certain group theoretic conditions involving the action of the symmetry group on the kernels, we show that secondary Hopf bifurcation is borne by the mode interaction. We explain this phenomenon by using linear representation theory. For motivation a...
متن کاملHopf Bifurcations in Problems with O(2) Symmetry: Canonical Coordinates Transformation
Hopf bifurcations in problems with O(2) symmetry are considered. In these problems, the Jacobian matrix is always singular at the circle of Z2 symmetric steady state solutions. While a couple of imaginary eigenvalue cross the imaginary axis, the Hopf bifurcation is not of standard type. The canonical coordinates transformation is used for removing the zero eigenvalue and converting the problem ...
متن کاملA bifurcation study of the three-dimensional thermohaline ocean circulation: The double hemispheric case
Within a low-resolution primitive-equation model of the three-dimensional ocean circulation, a bifurcation analysis is performed of double-hemispheric basin flows. Main focus is on the connection between results for steady two-dimensional flows in a nonrotating basin and those for threedimensional flows in a rotating basin. With the use of continuation methods, branches of steady states are fol...
متن کاملSymmetric Chaos in a Local Codimension Two Bifurcation with the Symmetry Group of a Square
We study a codimension two steady-state/steady-state mode interaction with D4 symmetry, where the center manifold is three-dimensional. Primary branches of equilibria undergo secondary Hopf bifurcations to periodic solutions which undergo further bifurcations leading to chaotic dynamics. This is not an exponentially small effect, and the chaos obtained in simulations using DsTool is large-scale...
متن کاملDirection-reversing traveling waves
The symmetries of a physical system provide a key to much of its dynamical behavior. As a consequence equivariant bifurcation theory has met with remarkable success in a wide range of physical applications, including fluid dynamics, laser physics, and chemical oscillations. (See, for example, refs. [1,2].) In this note we consider physical systems depending on a parameter/~ that are translation...
