چکیده
There are four fundamental atomic particles-the proton, the neutron, the electron, and the positron. The proton has mass and a unit positive electrical charge. The neutron has mass and no charge. The electron has very small mass compared with the proton and neutron, and has unit negative electrical charge. The positron is the positively charged counterpart of the electron, having equal mass and unit positive charge. The atom is composed of a positively charged central nucleus surrounded by a number of electrons. The nucleus is made up of protons and neutrons. The number of protons determines the positive charge and is known as the atomic number. The number of protons plus neutrons is the atomic mass number and determines the atomic weight. The number of orbital electrons surrounding the nucleus of an atom is equal to the number of protons in the nucleus. Hence the atom is electrically neutral. Since chemical reactions concern only interactions between the outer electrons, the chemical properties of an atom are determined by the number of orbital electrons-that is, they are characterized by the atomic number.

This little book is designed to present in brief outline form the basic principles underlying radioactivity, the derivation of a wide variety of artificial radioactive isotopes, and the application of these substances to biological problems. Following a discussion of the structure of atomic nuclei, the authors describe methods by which radioactive elements may be detected and suggest procedures...
متن کاملRemoval of cesium through adsorption from aqueous solutions: a systematic review
Cesium radioactive isotopes (134Cs and 137Cs) are dangerous to human health due to their long half-life and high solubility in water. Nuclear experiments, wars, and nuclear plant accidents have been the main sources of Cs release into the environment. In recent years, several methods have been introduced for the elimination of Cs radioactive isotopes from contaminated wate...

متن کاملSuccessful Experiments On Utilization Of High-Activity Nuclear Waste In The Process Of Transmutation In Growing Associations Of Microbiological Cultures
The problem of utilization of high-activity waste by effect of nuclear transmutation in growing associations of microbiological cultures was studied. For the first time we have observed utilization of several kinds of highly active isotopes in the volume of distilled water extracted from the first contour of water-water atomic reactor convert to non-radioactive nuclei. 1. The model and the foun...
متن کاملRadioactive isotopes in medicine: a review.
The following account is very selective: no attempt is made to deal exhaustively with radioisotope applications. In particular, practically no mention is made of treatment using, e.g., 1311, 198Au, or 90Yt, or of the literature dealing with the localizing of tumours, much of which is unprofitable. Circulatory dynamics, e.g., cardiac output, are ignored, as are most biochemical investigations wh...
