MechBass: A Systems Overview of a New Four-Stringed Robotic Bass Guitar

The Faculty of Engineering at Victoria University of Wellington, in Collaboration with the New Zealand School of Music, has constructed a four-stringed modular robotic bass guitar, MechBass. This paper presents a systems overview of the instrument, focusing on the fretting mechanism, picking mechanism, actuator control electronics, and control software. Upon evaluation and testing, MechBass has been deemed a successful project, having met its goals of speed, accuracy, and repeatability. KeywordsBass Guitar, Musical Robotics, Stringed Instruments
