The emergence of relative clauses in early child language
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper examines the development of relative clauses in early child language. It is argued that relative clauses constitute a network of related constructions that children acquire in a piecemeal bottom-up way, starting with relative clauses that are only little different from simple sentences which are gradually extended into more complex grammatical patterns. The acquisition process is driven by pragmatic and cognitive factors that are involved in the process of language use. The analysis draws on previous research with Michael Tomasello supplemented by a new corpus investigation of children’s spontaneous relative clauses in English (cf. Diessel and Tomasello 2000, 2005; Diessel 2004, 2008; Brandt, Diessel, and Tomasello 2007). The paper reports the results of three studies. The first study is a corpus investigation of the external properties of children’s early relative clauses; the second study is an experimental study investigating the way children process the internal structure of English and German relative clauses; and the third study is another corpus study examining the meaning of children’s subject and object relative clauses.

Learning of relative clauses by L3 learners of English
In surveys of third language acquisition (TLA) research, mixed results demonstrate that there is no consensus among researchers regarding the advantages and/or disadvantages of bilinguality on TLA. The main concern of the present study was, thus, to probe the probable differences between Persian monolingual and Azeri-Persian bilingual learners of English regarding their...
متن کاملThe effect of Code switching on the Acquisition of Object Relative Clauses by Iranian EFL Learners
This study attempted to investigate the impact of teacher’s code-switching on the acquisition of a problematic grammatical structure, namely, object relative clauses, by intermediate EFL learners. Moreover, a secondary objective of the study was to determine the EFL learners’ attitudes and opinions regarding the effectiveness of teacher’s code-switching in their learning of a specific aspect of...

Despite consensus in focus on form (FOF) instruction over the facilitative role of noticing, controversy has not quelled over ways of directing EFL learners’ attention towards formal features via implicit techniques like input-enhancement or explicit metacognitive feedback and interactive peer-editing on the output they produce. This quasi-experimental study investigated the impact of input enh...
متن کاملAcquisition of English Relative Clauses by Adult Persian Learners: Focus on Resumptive Pronouns
Tsimpli and Dimitrakopoulou (2007) observed that uninterpretable features are unavailable in second language (L2) acquisition after the critical period. In this paper, we verify this claim by providing evidence from Persian speaking learners of English as an L2 on the status of resumptive pronouns (RPs) as uniterpretable features. Unlike English which does not allow RPs, Persian shows various b...
