Coevolution of Mind and Language

چکیده
We consider the complexity of a discourse in human language that cannot be attributed to the knowledge of a single sentence. A simple recurrent neural network model called coupled dynamical recognizers is proposed to simulate the situation where two agents alternately make a model to imitate the conversation, predict the next utterance of the other speaker, and speak to each other. In speech processes a “smoothness principle” that demands preservation of a context flow should be obeyed in the present simulations. The experimental results show that there are some characteristic correlations between the agent’s inner model and the utterance pattern. We discuss, from the dynamical systems view, how the existence of two different levels of representation being constructed by each agent causes divergent utterance patterns and open-endedness of the conversation. An agent, namely a dynamical recognizer, has temporal geometrical patterns in his/her inner state space on which his/her next utterance depends. When a cloud-like representation is formed as a model of conversation, it provides the speaker with indeterminacy in choosing words, which leads to variety of discourse.

Issues in Coevolution of Language and Theory of Mind
Though some contemporary theories of language evolution see it as taking as its foundation the pre-evolution of theory of mind, acquisition data seem to show that the ability to pass the false belief test does not appear much before four years of age. What is more, some recent studies claim that this ability is crucially linked to the acquisition of some linguistic structures and/or concepts. T...

Theory of Mind is a comprehensive and general term about the state of intention that determines the quality of a person's social interaction and without it we would not be able to interpret the actions of others. While researchers express the causative role of language in Theory of Mind’s development as a social and fundamental capacity, recent studies have suggested a close link between ...

Introduction: Social skills are a fundamental link to all aspects of the life of children. This research was designed with the aim of designing a social skills model based on the role of the growth components of the language received by mediating the theory of mind in children ages four to six years old. Method: The research method was field research. The population of this study consisted of ...
متن کاملComparing Theory of Mind Skills and Language Performance between Children with Developmental Language Disorder, High-Functioning Autism, and Typically Developing Children
Background and purpose: Theory of Mind (TOM) is a cognitive ability to understand the beliefs, emotions, and desires of oneself and others, and its development is associated with proper development of other cognitive skills, including language. This study aimed at investigating the relationship between language and TOM and comparing the grammatical and lexical performances and TOM skills betwee...
متن کاملModeling Coevolution between Language and Memory Capacity during Language Origin
Memory is essential to many cognitive tasks including language. Apart from empirical studies of memory effects on language acquisition and use, there lack sufficient evolutionary explorations on whether a high level of memory capacity is prerequisite for language and whether language origin could influence memory capacity. In line with evolutionary theories that natural selection refined langua...
