A Study of Hybrid Vigor in a Cross between Poland China and Duroc Jersey Swine »
نویسنده
چکیده
Cross-breeding has been used for the purpose of recombining the best characteristics of two or more breeds in the formation of a new breed. This is a process that requires many years of continued selection. A second purpose in cross-breeding is to obtain immediate offspring possessing more desirable characteristics, such as greater size, more economical feed utilization, or more rapid growth, than are exhibited by either parental breed. Interest in cross-breeding for the production of market animals has been of long duration and at the present time is greater in the United States than it has been for decades. The recent success in the production of hybrid corn may have been a stimulating factor in this interest. The purpose of this experiment was to study the effect of crossbreeding on weight of pigs at birth, vigor, rapidity of growth, and economy of gain. BREEDS AND METHODS

Heterosis in crosses of inbred lines of Duroc swine.
B ETWEEN 1938 and 1949 seven different unrelated inbred lines of Duroc swine were developed by the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station in cooperation with the Regional Swine Breeding Laboratory. In sixteen of the twenty-two farrowing seasons from the spring of 1939 through the fall of 1949, both inbred and two-line-cross litters were produced. In some seasons outbred Duroc and three-linecr...

Purebred and two-breed cross (F1) boars were mated to F1 females to produce all possible three- and four-breed cross pigs involving the Duroc, Yorkshire, Landrace and Spotted breeds. Individual postweaning average daily gain (ADG), age at 100 kg (AGE) and probed backfat thickness at 100 kg (BF) data were collected on 3,456 pigs. A total of 213 pens with an average of 15.58 pigs per pen was eval...
متن کاملEvaluation of connectedness between herds for three pig breeds in China.
Using data on age at 100 kg of three pig breeds (Large White, Landrace and Duroc) the connectedness between herds in China was evaluated by the connectedness rating (CR) method. The results show that most herds in China have low average CR (0-3.59%) with other herds. In Large White, of the 36 herds analyzed there are 20 herds, which are connected with at least one other herd. In Landrace and Du...
متن کاملIndividual Heterosis and Breed Effects for Postweaning Performance and Carcass Traits in Four Breeds of Swine
Individual heterosis and direct and maternal breed effects for postweaning average daily gain (ADG), off-test age (AGE) and probed backfat thickness (BF) were estimated from data on 1,664 pigs produced in a complete diallel mating system involving the Duroc, Yorkshire, Landrace and Spotted breeds. The same genetic parameters were estimated for various carcass traits by analyses of data collecte...
متن کاملPerformance of Duroc and Yorkshire boars and gilts and reciprocal breed crosses.
Analyses of variance were computed for records on growth and body composition traits made in 1983 by 255 boars and gilts in selected and control lines of Durocs and Yorkshires and their reciprocal crossbreds. Previous selection over a period of several generations was mainly on an index of sow productivity including preweaning litter sizes and weight. Animals in the select lines were selected f...
