چکیده

High-pressure Brillouin scattering experiments were conducted on three natural, singlecrystal garnets with near end-member compositions: pyrope (Mg3Al2Si3O12), grossular (Ca3Al2Si3O12), and andradite (Ca3Fe2Si3O12). Acoustic velocities of the samples were measured from the samples at pressures to 10 GPa in a diamond-anvil cell with a methanolethanol-water pressure medium. Elastic stiffness constants (Cij) and their pressure dependencies (]Cij/]P) were calculated, as were aggregate elastic moduli (KS and G) and their respective pressure derivatives. The Cauchy relations changed with pressure for both grossular and andradite, suggesting that assuming these are constant is not valid for extrapolation to high pressures for these and possibly other minerals. The variation in ]KS /dP and ]G/]P was sensitive to composition and required a complex mixing model for extrapolation of end-member elasticity values from garnets of intermediate compositions.

Ab initio simulation of the IR spectra of pyrope, grossular, and andradite

IR spectra of pyrope Mg(3)Al(2)Si(3)O(12), grossular Ca(3)Al(2)Si(3)O(12) and andradite Ca(3)Fe(2)Si(3)O(12) garnets were simulated with the periodic ab initio CRYSTAL code by adopting an all-electron Gaussian-type basis set and the B3LYP Hamiltonian. Two sets of 17 F(1u) Transverse Optical (TO) and Longitudinal Optical (LO) frequencies were generated, together with their intensities. Because t...

Low-temperature heat capacities of synthetic pyrope,

The heat capacities of synthetic pyrope (Mg,Al,Si,O,,), grossular (CasAI,SisO12), and a solid solution pyrope,,grossular,, (Mg,,sCa,,,Al,Si,O,,) have been measured by adiabatic calorimetry in the temperature range l&350 K. The samples were crystallized from glasses in a conventional pistoncylinder apparatus. The molar thermophysical properties at 298.15 K (J mol’ K‘) are: c; So298 % H’h, &P Pyr...

Thermodynamics and Lattice Vibrations of Minerals 4. Application to Chain and Sheet Silicates and Orthosilicates

This paper is the fourth in a series relating the lattice vibrational properties to the thermodynamic properties of minerals. The temperature dependence of the harmonic lattice heat capacity is calculated from a model which uses only elastic, crystallographic, and spectroscopic data for the following minerals: calcite, zircon, forsterite, grossular, pyrope, almandine, spessartine, andradite, ky...

Thermodynamics and Lattice Vibrations of Minerals 2. Vibrational Characteristics of Silicates

General lattice vibrational properties of minerals, particularly those properties which strongly influence the thermodynamic behavior, are discussed in this paper (the second of a series relating thermodynamic and lattice vibrational properties of minerals). Infrared (IR), Raman (R), and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data are summarized, if known, for the following minerals: halite (INS), ...

Elasticity of single-crystal iron-bearing pyrope up to 20 GPa and 750 K

Elastic properties of the major constituent minerals in the Earth’s upper mantle at relevant high pressure–temperature (P–T ) conditions are crucial for understanding the composition and seismic velocity structures of this region. In this study, for the first time, we have measured the single-crystal elasticity of natural Fe-bearing pyrope, Mg2.04Fe0.74Ca0.16Mn0.05Al2Si3O12, using in situ Brill...
