چکیده

We have used the new GSC-II to significantly improve the absolute astrometric accuracy of a large number of ACS datasets from the first years of ACS operations, reducing the initial levels of uncertainty (typically 1 2”, or more in some cases) to an accuracy of about 0.1 0.3”. There are typically enough GSC-II objects in the field of view of the ACS/WFC detectors to enable a robust solution to be determined by identifying the GSC-II objects and comparing their measured positions with those in the GSC-II. The resulting set of improved header coordinates are accurate enough to permit immediate multi-band comparisons between data from HST and other space-based and ground-based facilities, as well as a range of wavebands including X-ray, mid-IR, and radio data. The Institute has also begun planning to extend this work by including it in the automatic processing pipeline for ACS and eventually perhaps also for other HST instruments.

Accurate optical-to-radio registration of Seyfert galaxies with HST images Absolute astrometry of HST images?

We propose a method to obtain accurate absolute astrometry of Hubble Space Telescope images. Ground based images are used to linkHST images to standard astrometric stars defining the optical frame of reference. The method has been used to register optical images of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5929 to the corresponding radio maps, allowing the exploration of the relationship between radio and optic...

Hst Astrometry of M4 and the Galactic Constant V 0 /r 0

From multi-epoch WFPC2/HST observations we present astrometric measurements of stars in the Galactic globular cluster M4 (NGC 6121) and in the foreground/background. The presence of an extragalactic point source allows us to determine the absolute proper motion of the cluster, and, through use of the field stars in this region only 18 from the Galactic center, to measure the difference between ...

Absolute motions of globular clusters . II ⋆ HST astrometry and VLT radial velocities in NGC 6397

In this paper we present a new, accurate determination of the three components of the absolute space velocity of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6397 (l ≃ 338◦, b ≃ −12◦). We used three HST/WFPC2 fields with multi-epoch observations to obtain astrometric measurements of objects in three different fields in this cluster. The identification of 33 background galaxies with sharp nuclei allowed us...

The Vela pulsar (PSR B0833-45) proper motion revisited with HST astrometry

Using all the HST WFC/WFPC2 images of the field collected so far, we have performed an accurate relative astrometry analysis to re-assess the value of the Vela pulsar proper motion. Although covering a much shorter time span, our measurement clearly confirms the previous result obtained by Nasuti et al. (1997) using ground-based optical data and nails down the proper motion value to μ = 52 ± 3 ...
