Structural balance: a generalization of Heider's theory.

چکیده
A persistent problem of psychology has been how to deal conceptually with patterns of interdependent properties. This problem has been central, of course, in the theoretical treatment by Gestalt psychologists of phenomenal or neural configurations or fields (12, 13, 15). It has also been of concern to social psychologists and sociologists who attempt to employ concepts referring to social systems (18). Heider (19), reflecting the general field-theoretical approach, has considered certain aspects of cognitive fields which contain perceived people and impersonal objects or events. His analysis focuses upon what he calls the P-O-X unit of a cognitive field, consisting of P (one person), 0 (another person), and X (an impersonal entity). Each relation among the parts of the unit is conceived as interdependent with each other relation. Thus, for example, if P has a relation of affection for 0 and if 0 is seen as responsible for X, then there will be a tendency for P to like or approve of X. If the nature of X is such that it would "normally" be evaluated as bad, the whole P-O-X unit is placed in a state of imbalance, and pressures

A generalization of the probability that the commutator of two group elements is equal to a given element
The probability that the commutator of two group elements is equal to a given element has been introduced in literature few years ago. Several authors have investigated this notion with methods of the representation theory and with combinatorial techniques. Here we illustrate that a wider context may be considered and show some structural restrictions on the group.
متن کاملBalanced Semantics for Argumentation based on Heider's Socio-Psychological Balance Theory
Argumentation, whether philosophical or formal and mathematical, is a discipline of interdisciplinary nature, per se. The recent works on the computational argumentation formalism and their foundations, however, have rested only on logic or logical account. In this paper, we reconsider Dung’s seminal argument acceptability notion in the context of Heider’s socio-psychological balance theory, wh...
متن کامل13 . Prologue to a Unified Theory of Attitudes , Stereotypes , and Self - concept ANTHONY
The theoretical analysis in this chapter connects social psychology's central cognitive constructs, stereotype and self-concept, to its central affective constructs, attitude and self-esteem. In addition to proposing this unified account of social psychology's major theoretical constructs, the chapter seeks to unify the competing affective-cognitive consistency principles of social psychology's...
متن کاملModeling of human society as a locally interacting product-potential networks of automaton
The central problems in social sciences concern the social and psychological mechanisms and conditions required for the emergence and stability of human groups. The present article is dedicated to the problem of stability of human groups. We model human groups using local interacting systems of automaton with relations and reactions and using the structural balance theory. The ‘structural balan...
متن کاملPartitioning signed social networks
Structural balance theory has proven useful for delineating the blockmodel structure of signed social networks. Even so, most of the observed signed networks are not perfectly balanced. One possibility for this is that in examining the dynamics underlying the generation of signed social networks, insufficient attention has been given to other processes and features of signed networks. These inc...
