چکیده

A protistan endoparasite was d~scovered in the yolk of embryos and larvae of cod Gadus morhua L. from the Baltic. The prevalence of infestation ranged from 0 to 30 ":>. Two stages of the parasite were identified under transmiss~on electron microscopy. One stage was apparently mononucleated; the other stage was multinucleated and seemed to be b reak~ng-up into numerous, mononucleated organisms. The endoparas~te IS compared with the slngle example In the literature of infestat~ons in the yolk of marine fish larvae caused by the dlnoflagellate lchthyodini~~m chabelardiand the consequences for larval health are briefly discussed.

Maternal and paternal influences on early life history traits and processes of Baltic cod Gadus morhua

Embryo survival, larval standard length, yolk-sac area, yolk utilization and resistance to starvation were significantly influenced by the female parent and the interaction between both parents of Baltic Sea cod Gadus morhua in a gamete factorial cross of 3 females and 5 males in all possible combinations. The proportion of variance in embryonic survivorship that was due to maternity during inc...

Impacts of regular and random noise on the behaviour, growth and development of larval Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua)

Anthropogenic noise impacts behaviour and physiology in many species, but responses could change with repeat exposures. As repeat exposures can vary in regularity, identifying regimes with less impact is important for regulation. We use a 16-day split-brood experiment to compare effects of regular and random acoustic noise (playbacks of recordings of ships), relative to ambient-noise controls, ...

Predation by a carnivorous marine copepod, Euchaeta norvegica Boeck, on eggs and larvae of the North Atlantic cod Gadus morhua L

The predatory behavior of a carnivorous marine copepod, Euchaeta norvegica Boeck, feeding on eggs and larvae of the North Atlantic cod Gadus morhua L. was examined. In the laboratory, adult females of Euchaeta norvegica did not feed on eggs. Predation rates on yolk-sac larvae and starved post-yolk-sac larvae did not vary significantly with age up to 14 days old because of little change in size ...

Fine-scale observations of the predatory behaviour of the carnivorous copepod Paraeuchaeta norvegica and the escape responses of their ichthyoplankton prey, Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua)

Paraeuchaeta norvegica (8.5 mm total length) and yolk-sac stage Atlantic cod larvae (4 mm total length) (Gadus morhua) larvae were observed in aquaria (3 l of water) using silhouette video photography. This allowed direct observations (and quantitative measurement) of predator–prey interactions between these two species in 3-dimensions. Tail beats, used by cod larvae to propel themselves throug...

Adaptation to Low Salinity Promotes Genomic Divergence in Atlantic Cod (Gadus morhua L.)

How genomic selection enables species to adapt to divergent environments is a fundamental question in ecology and evolution. We investigated the genomic signatures of local adaptation in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) along a natural salinity gradient, ranging from 35‰ in the North Sea to 7‰ within the Baltic Sea. By utilizing a 12 K SNPchip, we simultaneously assessed neutral and adaptive gene...
