چکیده

In the present study plate-impact pressure-shear friction experiments are conducted to study dynamics of high-speed slip at metal-on-metal interfaces. By using a CH tool-steel/Ti–6Al–4V tribo-pair and appropriate selection of the flyer and target plate thicknesses, the experiment has been used to investigate the frictional resistance of sliding interfaces subjected to step changes in slip rates. In order to describe the frictional memory effects a model based on Ruina–Dieterich slip law has been utilized. It is noted that the model parameter a in the range of 0.01–0.25 with characteristic lengths of L=5–7 m provides a reasonably good fit to the experimental data. © 2009 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3259395

Rate and State Dependent Friction and the Stability of Sliding Between Elastically Deformable Solids

We study the stability of steady sliding between elastically deformable continua using rate and state dependent friction laws. That is done for both elastically identical and elastically dissimilar solids. The focus is on linearized response to perturbations of steady state sliding, and on studying how the positive direct effect (instantaneous increase or decrease of shear strength in response ...

An empirically based steady state friction law and implications for fault stability

Empirically based rate-and-state friction laws (RSFLs) have been proposed to model the dependence of friction forces with slip and time. The relevance of the RSFL for earthquake mechanics is that few constitutive parameters define critical conditions for fault stability (i.e., critical stiffness and frictional fault behavior). However, the RSFLs were determined from experiments conducted at sub...

Post-seismic and interseismic fault creep I: model description

S U M M A R Y We present a model of localized, aseismic fault creep during the full interseismic period, including both transient and steady fault creep, in response to a sequence of imposed coseismic slip events and tectonic loading. We consider the behaviour of models with linear viscous, non-linear viscous, rate-dependent friction, and rateand state-dependent friction fault rheologies. Both ...

Spectral element modeling of spontaneous earthquake rupture on rate and state faults: Effect of velocitystrengthening friction at shallow depths

[1] We develop a spectral element method (SEM) for simulating dynamic rupture on rate and state faults and use it to study how the rupture is affected by a shallow fault region of steady state velocity-strengthening friction. Our comparison of the developed SEM and a spectral boundary integral method (BIM) for an antiplane (two-dimensional) test problem shows that for the finest resolution that...

A constitutive model for fault gouge deformation in dynamic rupture simulations

In the context of numerical simulations of elastodynamic ruptures, we compare friction laws, including the linear slip-weakening (SW) law, the Dieterich-Ruina (DR) law, and the Free Volume (FV) law. The FV law is based on microscopic physics, incorporating Shear Transformation Zone (STZ) Theory which describes local, non-affine rearrangements within the granular fault gouge. A dynamic state var...
