Evidence of long-term seasonal climate forcing in rhizolith isotopes during the last glaciation

چکیده
[1] High density carbonate rhizoliths were found from a loess-paleosol succession from the late Wisconsin period (21–11 ka) in Illinois. Their morphology shows that they formed in a close contact with living and decomposing roots, suggesting a root/microbial respiration origin. Carbon (dC) and oxygen (dO) isotopic analyses were performed on 36 and 37 individual rhizoliths of two separate 10 cm intervals and 98 bulk rhizoliths of all 10 cm intervals. The results of the individual rhizolith dC and dO analyses suggest that the carbon source was largely derived from respiring C3, C4 and microbial biomass, and that meteoric water was controlled mainly by warm-season precipitation. The results of bulk rhizolith dC and dO analyses show that warm-season proxies varied in phase with glacial fluctuations at submillennial scales, suggesting long-term seasonal forcing may have played an important role on climate change during the late Wisconsin glaciation in North America.

Orbital forcing of Arctic climate: mechanisms of climate response and implications for continental glaciation
Progress in understanding how terrestrial ice volume is linked to Earth s orbital configuration has been impeded by the cost of simulating climate system processes relevant to glaciation over orbital time scales (10–10 years). A compromise is usually made to represent the climate system by models that are averaged over one or more spatial dimensions or by threedimensional models that are limite...
متن کاملIntegrated summer insolation forcing and 40,000-year glacial cycles: The perspective from an ice-sheet/energy-balance model
[1] Although the origins of the 40,000-year glacial cycles during the early Pleistocene are readily attributed to changes in Earth’s obliquity (also having a 40,000-year period), the lack of ice-volume variability at precession periods (20,000 years) is difficult to reconcile with most parameterizations of the insolation forcing. It was recently proposed that precession’s influence on glaciatio...
متن کاملSeasonal Climate Variability and Change in the Pacific Northwest of the United States
Observed changes in climate of the U.S. Pacific Northwest since the early twentieth century were examined using four different datasets. Annual mean temperature increased by approximately 0.68–0.88C from 1901 to 2012, with corroborating indicators including a lengthened freeze-free season, increased temperature of the coldest night of the year, and increased growing-season potential evapotransp...
متن کاملThe role of carbon dioxide during the onset of Antarctic glaciation.
Earth's modern climate, characterized by polar ice sheets and large equator-to-pole temperature gradients, is rooted in environmental changes that promoted Antarctic glaciation ~33.7 million years ago. Onset of Antarctic glaciation reflects a critical tipping point for Earth's climate and provides a framework for investigating the role of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO(2)) during major climatic...
متن کاملNorthern Hemisphere glaciation and the evolution of Plio‐Pleistocene climate noise
[1] Deterministic orbital controls on climate variability are commonly inferred to dominate across timescales of 10–10 years, although some studies have suggested that stochastic processes may be of equal or greater importance. Here we explicitly quantify changes in deterministic orbital processes (forcing and/or pacing) versus stochastic climate processes during the Plio‐Pleistocene, via time‐...
