merer at various stages of his progress toward recovery. The determination of alveolar carbon dioxide is readily made by analysis of expired air. The tension, or partial pressure, of the C02 thus ascertained very closely approximates that of the arterial blood of the subject. For a prolonged research upon psychological clinical subjects, this method is obviously preferable to direct blood analysis. Perhaps the most convenient method for the determination of the carbon dioxide content of alveolar air

The Diagnostic Value of End-tidal Carbon Dioxide (EtCO2) and Alveolar Dead Space (AVDS) in Patients with Suspected Pulmonary Thrombo-embolism (PTE)

Introduction: Capnography, is an easy, fast and practical method which its application in the diagnosis of Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy (PTE) has recently been studied. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic value of end-tidal CO2 (ETCO2) and the alveolar dead space (AVDS) in the diagnosis of patients suspected to PTE who have been referred to the emergency department. Materials and Metho...

The influence of venous admixture on alveolar dead space and carbon dioxide exchange in acute respiratory distress syndrome: computer modelling

INTRODUCTION Alveolar dead space reflects phenomena that render arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide higher than that of mixed alveolar gas, disturbing carbon dioxide exchange. Right-to-left shunt fraction (Qs/Qt) leads to an alveolar dead space fraction (VdAS/VtA; where VtA is alveolar tidal volume). In acute respiratory distress syndrome, ancillary physiological disturbances may includ...

Changes in Respiration Associated with Hypnotically Induced Emotion, Pain, and Exercise.

The effect of hypnotic suggestion of naturally occurring and experimentally induced psychologic stress on the respiratory system was studied in 11 young male subjects. It was found that hypnotic suggestion of deep relaxation and depression formed one end of the spectrum, while suggestion of exercise, anger, and anxiety formed the other end. Patterns of response in the first group were called no...

Solubility Prediction of High Molecular Weight n-Paraffins in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

Solubility of high molecular weight n-paraffins in supercritical carbon dioxide has been a matter of interest to many researchers. However, not sufficient solubility experimental data are available although the methods by which the experimental data are obtained have many varieties. Utilizing cubic equations of state is an effective method for solubility prediction of n-paraffins in supercr...

ABNORMALrTY OF LUNGS OR THORACIC CAGE

The lungs normally are ventilated with enough air to dilute the carbon dioxide produced by metabolism, so that the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (Pco,) in the alveoli is kept remarkably close to 40 mm. Hg. It is the alveolar ventilation and not the total amount of air going in or out of the mouth (or 'minute-volume') that determines the Pco2 because a varying proportion of the total ventil...
