A Simple Test for the Existence of Two Accretion Modes in Active Galactic Nuclei
نویسنده
چکیده
By analogy to the different accretion states observed in black-hole X-ray binaries (BHXBs), it appears plausible that accretion disks in active galactic nuclei (AGN) undergo a state transition between a radiatively efficient and inefficient accretion flow. If the radiative efficiency changes at some critical accretion rate, there will be a change in the distribution of black hole masses and bolometric luminosities at the corresponding transition luminosity. To test this prediction, I consider the joint distribution of AGN black hole masses and bolometric luminosities for a sample taken from the literature. The small number of objects with low Eddington-scaled accretion rates ṁ < 0.01 and black hole massesMBH < 10 M⊙ constitutes tentative evidence for the existence of such a transition in AGN. Selection effects, in particular those associated with flux-limited samples, systematically exclude objects in particular regions of the (MBH, Lbol) plane. Therefore, they require particular attention in the analysis of distributions of black hole mass, bolometric luminosity, and derived quantities like the accretion rate. I suggest further observational tests of the BHXB-AGN unification scheme which are based on the jet domination of the energy output of BHXBs in the hard state, and on the possible equivalence of BHXB in the very high (or steep power-law) state showing ejections and efficiently accreting quasars and radio galaxies with powerful radio jets. Optical Variability in Active Galactic Nuclei: Starbursts or Disk Instabilities?
Aperiodic optical variability is a common property of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), though its physical origin is still open to question. To study the origin of the optical – ultraviolet variability in AGN, we compare light curves of two models to observations of quasar 0957+561 in terms of a structure function analysis. In the starburst (SB) model, random superposition of supernovae in the nu...
متن کاملAccretion Flows in X–Ray Binaries and Active Galactic Nuclei
Hard X–ray emission is ubiquitous in accreting black holes, both in Galactic binary systems and in Active Galactic Nuclei. I review the different spectra which can be seen from these systems, and possible ways of producing this emission. X–ray reflection should give an observational test of these scenarios, but we need better models before this can give an unambiguous diagnostic of the accretio...
متن کاملA Simplified Solution for Advection Dominated Accretion Flows with Outflow
The existence of outflow in the advection dominated accretion flows has been confirmed by both numerical simulations and observations. The outow models for ADAF have been investigated by several groups with a simple self similar solution. But this solution is inaccurate at the inner regions and can not explain the emitted spectrum of the flow; so, it is necessary to obtain a global solution for...
متن کاملA Single Intrinsic Luminosity Function for Both Type-I and Type-II Active Galactic Nuclei
The luminous electromagnetic emission from distant active galactic nuclei (AGNs) including quasars is believed to be powered by accretion onto supermassive black holes (SMBHs). In the standard unification model for AGNs a dusty torus covers a significant portion of the viewing angles to the accretion disk and the BH. The system is classified as a type-I AGN if the accretion disk is viewed throu...
متن کاملSimulating the formation of disk galaxies: The impact of Jets from Active Galactic Nuclei
Recent semi-analytic models have highlighted the role of AGN jets in regulating the formation of galaxies. In this paper, we present a new implementation of feedback due to active galactic nuclei (AGN) in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy formation in which AGN feedback is assumed to heat the halo gas through the production of jets. Combining a theoretical model of mass accretion ...
