چکیده

Aims. We wish to provide simple and accurate analytic approximations for the low frequency double Compton (DC) emission coefficient , which are applicable in a broad range of physical situations up to mildly relativistic temperatures and may be useful for checking under which circumstances the double Compton process is important. Methods. We perform series expansions of the DC emission integral for low energies of the incident photon and electron and compare the derived analytic expressions with the results obtained by numerical integrations of the full DC cross section. Results. We explicitly derived analytic approximations to the low frequency double Compton emission coefficient for initial monochromatic photons and Wien spectra. We show that combining the analytic approximations given in this paper an accuracy of better than 5 % in a very broad range of temperatures and under various physical conditions can be achieved. Furthermore we show that the double Compton emissivity strongly depends on the ratio of the energies of the incoming photon and electron: for hard photons and cold electrons the emission is strongly suppressed as compared to the case of similar photon and electron energy, whereas in the opposite situation, i.e. hot electrons and soft initial photons, the emission is enhanced. For photons and electrons close to ther-modynamic equilibrium the double Compton emissivity increases less rapidly with temperature Lightman-Thorne approximation and the corrections exceed the level of ∼ 10% for temperatures above 4 keV.

Ultra- Relativistic Solitons with Opposing Behaviors in Photon Gas Plasma

We have studied the formation of relativistic solitary waves due to nonlinearinteraction of strong electromagnetic wave with the plasma wave. Here, our plasma isrelativistic both in temperature and in streaming speed. A set of equations consisting ofscalar and vector potentials together with a third order equation for the enthalpy inphoton gas plasma is obtained analytic...

The broad-band spectrum of 3C 120 observed by BeppoSAX

We study a broad-band X-ray observation by BeppoSAX of the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 120. The primary X-ray continuum is well described by a power law with the photon index of Γ ∼ 1.85± 0.05 and a high-energy break or a cutoff. The obtained e-folding energy of ∼ 100–300 keV corresponds to kT ∼ 50 keV in thermal-Compton models. A soft X-ray excess is found at a statistical significance of & 98%...

X-ray spectra from magnetar candidates. II. Resonant cross sections for electron-photon scattering in the relativistic regime

Recent models of spectral formation in magnetars called renewed attention on electron-photon scattering in the presence of ultra-strong magnetic fields. Investigations presented so far mainly focussed on mildly relativistic particles and magnetic scattering was treated in the non-relativistic (Thomson) limit. This allows for consistent spectral calculations up to a few tens of keVs, but becomes...

Inverse Compton Scattering in Mildly Relativistic Plasma

We investigated the effect of inverse Compton scattering in mildly relativistic static and moving plasmas with low optical depth using Monte Carlo simulations, and calculated the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect in the cosmic background radiation. Our semi-analytic method is based on a separation of photon diffusion in frequency and real space. We use Monte Carlo simulation to derive the intensity and...

Radiative Acceleration and Transient, Radiation-induced Electric Fields

The radiative acceleration of particles and the electrostatic potential fields that arise in low density plasmas hit by radiation produced by a transient, compact source are investigated. We calculate the dynamical evolution and asymptotic energy of the charged particles accelerated by the photons and the radiation-induced electric double layer in the full relativistic, Klein-Nishina regime. Fo...
