چکیده

We quantified protection given by a variety of gloves against bat bites by using steel indenters to simulate teeth and measuring forces needed to puncture the gloves. Level of protection given by gloves was compared to expected bite forces and tooth sharpness of bats. Cotton, plastic-coated synthetic fabric, and proprietary materials advertised as punctureand cut-resistant were easy to penetrate compared to leather gloves. Split leather gives the highest level of protection, but with reduced dexterity. These are best for handling larger bats (.40 g) or if higher safety is preferred. Deerskin gives reasonable protection without much loss in dexterity for handling bats ,40 g. ( JOURNAL OF WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT 73(7):1251–1254; 2009) DOI: 10.2193/2008-295

Non-touch suturing technique fails to reduce glove puncture rates in an accident and emergency department.

OBJECTIVE To assess the impact of introducing a safer non-touch suturing technique into an inner city emergency department. METHODS The rate of glove perforation, measured by electrical conductance, was used as a marker. Gloves (Bodyguards) used in suturing were collected over a two month period. Two half day suture workshops were then conducted in the emergency department and gloves were col...

Glove Perforations during Oral & Maxillofacial Surgical Procedures

Seventy nine (13%) punctures were identified in 612 gloves. Gloves from the left hand showed the highest incidence of punctures. No puncture was observed in 100 gloves tested as a control. The results showed that glove puncture was more likely to occur in gloves worn on left (nonworking) hand overall as compared with gloves from the right hand. Gloves used for surgical procedures in which wires...

Bats, viruses, emerging diseases and humans

This paper reviews the unique characteristics of bats, their important roles in providing ecosystem services, their viruses in relation to emerging diseases. Bats, as flying mammals, are the second largest order following rodents, with a wide variety (over 1400 identified species among 230 genera of 21 families in the world) due to their flying power and echolocation. Despite their importance a...

Gloves against mineral oils and mechanical hazards: composites of carboxylated acrylonitrile–butadiene rubber latex

Resistance to permeation of noxious chemical substances should be accompanied by resistance to mechanical factors because the glove material may be torn, cut or punctured in the workplace. This study reports on glove materials, protecting against mineral oils and mechanical hazards, made of carboxylated acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (XNBR) latex. The obtained materials were characterized by a ...

Standardization of needlestick injury and evaluation of a novel virus-inhibiting protective glove.

Rubber surgical gloves worn as a barrier to prevent contamination from body fluids offer relative protection against contamination through direct percutaneous injuries involving needles, scalpel blades or bone fragments. To determine the main experimental parameters influencing the volume of blood transmitted by a hollow-bore needle (worst case scenario) during an accidental puncture, we design...
