چکیده

Although ray tracing has been successfully applied to interactively render large datasets, supersampling pixels will not be practical in interactive applications for some time. Because large datasets tend to have subpixel detail, one-sample-per-pixel ray tracing can produce visually distracting popping and scintillation. We present an algorithm that directs primary rays toward locations rendered in previous frames, thereby increasing temporal coherence. Our method tracks intersection points over time, and these tracked points are used as an oracle to aim rays for the next frame. This is in contrast to traditional image-based rendering techniques which advocate color reuse. We so acquire coherence between frames which reduces temporal artifacts without introducing significant processing overhead or causing

Interactive Rendering with Coherent Ray Tracing

For almost two decades researchers have argued that ray tracing will eventually become faster than the rasterization technique that completely dominates todays graphics hardware. However, this has not happened yet. Ray tracing is still exclusively being used for off-line rendering of photorealistic images and it is commonly believed that ray tracing is simply too costly to ever challenge raster...

Interactive Ray Tracing of Arbitrary Implicit Functions

We present a practical and efficient algorithm for interactively ray tracing arbitrary implicit surfaces. We use interval arithmetic both for reliable numerical computation and guaranteed detection of topological features. In conjunction with ray tracing, this allows for rendering literally any implicit surface simply from its definition. Interactive ray tracing facilitates flexible shading and...

Interactive Global Illumination using Fast Ray Tracing

Rasterization hardware provides interactive frame rates for rendering dynamic scenes, but lacks the ability of ray tracing required for efficient global illumination simulation. Existing ray tracing based methods yield high quality renderings but are far too slow for interactive use. We present a new parallel global illumination algorithm that perfectly scales, has minimal preprocessing and com...

Interactive Distribution Ray Tracing

Distribution ray tracing uses multiple samples per pixel to produce antialiased images that include soft shadows, glossy reflection, motion blur, and depth-of-field. The two main potential barriers to making distribution ray tracing interactive are that many rays might be required, and that those rays are not coherent enough to derive efficiency from tracing them in packets. A new interleaved s...

Interactive Distributed Ray Tracing of Highly Complex Models

Many disciplines must handle the creation, visualization, and manipulation of huge and complex 3D environments. Examples include large structural and mechanical engineering projects dealing with entire cars, ships, buildings, and processing plants. The complexity of such models is usually far beyond the interactive rendering capabilities of todays 3D graphics hardware. Previous approaches relie...
