The Effect of Satellite Galaxies on Gravitational Lensing Flux Ratios
نویسنده
چکیده
Gravitational lenses with anomalous flux ratios are often cited as possible evidence for dark matter satellites predicted by simulations of hierarchical merging in cold dark matter cosmogonies. We show that the fraction of quads with anomalous flux ratios depends primarily on the total mass and spatial extent of the satellites, and the characteristic lengthscale d1/2 of their distribution. If d1/2 ∼ 100 kpc, then for a moderately elliptical galaxy with a line-ofsight velocity dispersion of ∼ 250 kms, a mass of ∼ 3 × 109M⊙ in highly-concentrated (Plummer model) satellites is needed for 20 % of quadruplets to show anomalous flux ratios, rising to ∼ 1.25 × 1010M⊙ for 50 %. Several times these masses are required if the satellites have more extended Hernquist profiles. Compared to a typical elliptical, the flux ratios of quads formed by typical edge-on disc galaxies with maximum discs are significantly less susceptible to changes through substructure – three times the mass in satellite galaxies is needed to affect 50% of the systems. In many of the lens systems with anomalous flux ratios, there is evidence for visible satellites (e.g., B2045+265 or MG0414+0534). We show that if the anomaly is produced by substructure with properties similar to the simulations, then optically identified substructure should not be preponderant among lens systems with anomalies. There seem to be two possible resolutions of this difficulty. First, in some cases, visible substructure may be projected within or close to the Einstein radius and wrongly ascribed as the culprit, whereas dark matter substructure is causing the flux anomaly. Second, bright satellites, in which baryon cooling and condensation has taken place, may have higher central densities than dark satellites, rendering them more efficient at causing flux anomalies.

Probing Dark Matter Substructure in Lens Galaxies
We investigate the effects of numerous dark matter subhalos in a galaxy-sized halo on the events of strong lensing, to assess their presence as expected from the cold dark matter scenario. Lens galaxies are represented by a smooth ellipsoid in an external shear field and additional cold dark matter subhalos taken from Monte Carlo realizations which accord with recent N-body results. We also con...
متن کاملCompound gravitational lensing as a probe of dark matter substructure within galaxy halos
We show how observations of multiply–imaged quasars at high redshift can be used as a probe of dark matter clumps (subhalos with masses < ∼ 10 M⊙) within the virialized extent of more massive lensing halos. A large abundance of such satellites is predicted by numerical simulations of galaxy formation in cold dark matter (CDM) cosmogonies. Small–scale structure within galaxy halos affects the fl...
متن کاملDetection of a Companion Lens Galaxy using the Mid-infrared Flux Ratios of the Gravitationally Lensed Quasar H1413+117
We present the first resolved mid-IR (11μm) observations of the four-image quasar lens H1413+117 using the Michelle camera on Gemini North. All previous observations (optical, near-IR, and radio) of this lens show a “flux anomaly,” where the image flux ratios cannot be explained by a simple, central lens galaxy. We attempt to reproduce the mid-IR flux ratios, which are insensitive to extinction...
متن کاملGravitational Lensing of the X-Ray Background by Clusters of Galaxies
Gravitational lensing by clusters of galaxies affects the cosmic X-ray background (XRB) by altering the observed density and flux distribution of background X-ray sources. At faint detection flux thresholds, the resolved X-ray sources appear brighter and diluted, while the unresolved component of the XRB appears dimmer and more anisotropic, due to lensing. The diffuse X-ray intensity in the out...
متن کاملLuminous satellite galaxies in gravitational lenses
Substructures, expected in cold dark matter haloes, have been proposed to explain the anomalous flux ratios in gravitational lenses. About 25% of lenses in the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey (CLASS) appear to have luminous satellites within ∼ 5 h kpc of the main lensing galaxies, which are usually at redshift z ∼ 0.2− 1. In this work we use the Millennium Simulation combined with galaxy catalogues ...
