چکیده

MMICAJmJOURNAL Summary Evidence is presented that a cytopathic agent isolated from human nose, throat, and bronchial swabs, and termed " Ryan virus" is in fact an amoeba of the genus Hartmannella. Detection of a protozoal cell-type by electron microscopy led to the recognition of typical trophozoites and cysts of this free-living soil amoeba in inoculated tissue cultures. Details are given of cytopathic effects due to the amoebae, involving primarily the nuclei in cell cultures. It is probable that amoebae do occur in the nasopharynx in some patients with respiratory illness, and they should not necessarily be regarded as laboratory contaminants. Their clinical significance and pathogenicity for man are at present conjectural. We are indebted to our colleague Dr. D. C. Warhurst for help in identification of the amoebae, which he was able to grow readily, with encystment, on agar plates inoculated with killed Aerobacter aerogens. We are grateful to Dr. Janet Niven for helpful advice and documentation. Our thanks are also due to Dr. Reports in the literature on haemolysis as a complication of typhoid fever are few, and such as do exist stress its rarity

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.

Out of 20 patients with viral hepatitis whose glucose-6phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) levels were normal, 14 had clinical evidence of a mild to moderate degree of haemolysis but in all the patients studied the half life of chromium-51-labelled red cells was shortened. Out of 18 viral hepatitis patients deficient in G-6-PD 17 had clinical evidence of haemolysis, and in eight this was more seve...

On the relation between malaria and G-6-PD deficiency.

SUMMARY On the basis of the hypothesis that in the regions where favism is present a high correlation exists between endemic malaria and the frequency of G-6-PD deficiency, Huheey and Martin (1975) in a recent paper suggest that the haemolytic event in a malarial environment is a favourable selective factor. Therefore, the fitness of the G-6-PD-deficient individual who shows haemolysis is highe...

Management of Typhoid Fever and Bacterial Meningitis by Chloramphenicol in Infants and Children

Chloramphenicol inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria and is usually bacteriostatic but is bactericidal against Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Neisseria meningitis. Chloramphenicol penetrates all body tissues well. The cerebrospinal fluid concentration averages 60% of the serum level, while brain levels are 9 times higher because of high lipid solubility of this drug. Ch...
