Non-physiological differences between male and female speech: evidence from the delayed F0 fall phenomenon in Japanese
نویسندگان
چکیده
There is a perceptual difference between male and female speech in fbndamental frequency and, less significantly, in formant frequencies. These characteristics are physiologically determined to a great extent, and thus speakers exert little control over these characteristics in their normal utterances. The present study investigates whether some characteristics of hndamental frequency are also manipulated by speakers to make speech quality more feminine. The results of our experiment show that the delay of the FO fall that signals a lexical accent is associated with femininity in Japanese.

The function of F0-peak delay in Japanese
I. INTRODUCTION There is a perceptual difference between male and female speech in fundamental frequency (F0) and, less significantly, in formant frequencies. Many, naturally, assume that these characteristics are physiologically determined to a great extent, and thus speakers exert little control over these characteristics in their normal utterances. F0 is certainly influenced by anatomical di...
متن کاملThe F0 fall delay of lexical pitch accent in Japanese Infant-directed speech
The current study examined the acoustic modifications of the lexical pitch accent in Tokyo Japanese infant-directed speech (IDS), with the focus on the F0 fall delay, where the alignment of the F0 turning points associated with pitch accents were delayed with respect to the accented mora. The RIKEN MotherInfant Conversation Corpus (R-JMICC) [1] produced by 21 mothers from Tokyo area, was used t...
متن کاملEffects of Genetic and Non-genetic Factors on Body Weight and Carcass Related Traits in Two Strains of Japanese Quails
The current study was conducted to investigate the effects of genetic and non-genetic factors on body weight and carcass traits of Japanese quails. Two strains of Japanese quail (150 wild quails and 150 white quails) were used as base population. Four mating groups were used to produce progenies: wild male × wild female, white male × wild female, wild male × white female and white male × white ...
متن کاملVocal Parameters of Adults with Down Syndrome in Zahedan /Iran
Background & Aims: Previous studies have indicated significant differences in vocal parameters between children with Down syndrome and normal children, but there are challenges about these differences. In this study vocal parameters and Maximum Phonation Time (MPT) in adults with Down syndrome have been investigated. Method: This cross-sectional and analytic study was performed on 22 adults wit...
متن کاملGender-related Frequency Characteristics in Children’s Speech
This study investigates the two frequency characteristics, F0 and F1F2, of the speech of Cantonese children, male and female, of nine age groups from 4 to 12. The F0 data on the Cantonese tones [55 33 22] from children show that (i) the patterns of the age-related decrease in F0 are similar between male and female children before age 12; (ii) at age 12, there is a large drop in F0 in male child...
