Cronin effect and high – p ⊥ suppression in the nuclear gluon distribution at small x

چکیده
We present a systematic, and fully analytic, study of the ratio RpA between the gluon distribution in a nucleus and that in a proton scaled up by the atomic number A. We consider initial conditions of the McLerran–Venugopalan type, and quantum evolution in the Color Glass Condensate, with both fixed and running coupling. We perform an analytic study of the Cronin effect in the initial conditions and point out an interesting difference between saturating effects and twist effects in the nuclear gluon distribution. We show that the distribution of the gluons which make up the condensate in the initial conditions is localized at low momenta, but this particularity does not survive after the quantum evolution. We demonstrate that the rapid suppression of the ratio RpA in the early stages of the evolution is due to the DGLAP–like evolution of the proton, whose gluon distribution grows much faster than that in the nucleus because of the large separation between the respective saturation momenta. The flattening of the Cronin peak, on the other hand, is due to the evolution of the nucleus. We emphasize interesting differences between the fixed coupling and the running coupling scenarios, which are particulary important in the late stages of the evolution. Cronin effect and high–p⊥ suppression from the Color Glass Condensate
I give a pedagogical survey of the nuclear collective effects associated with gluon saturation and their impact on particle production in high–energy proton (or deuteron)–nucleus collisions at RHIC. At central rapidity, the theory predicts a Cronin peak due to independent multiple scattering off the valence quarks in the nucleus. At forward rapidities, the peak flattens out and disappears very ...
متن کاملHigh pt Suppression in CuCu Collsions at sNN = 200 GeV at RHIC
Collisions between hadronic systems at relativistic energies provide a window on the small-x gluon distributions of fast moving nuclei. It has been predicted that gluon saturation effects will manifest themselves as a suppression in the transverse momentum (p t) distribution at a scale which is connected with the rapidity of the measured particles. Saturation effects are most evident at large (...

We study the gluon content of a large nucleus (i) in the semi-classical McLerran-Venugopalan model and (ii) in the high energy limit as given by the quantum evolution of the Color Glass Condensate. متن کاملHigh energy pA collisions in the color glass condensate approach I. Gluon production and the Cronin effect
We study gluon production in high energy proton-nucleus collisions in the semi-classical framework of the Color Glass Condensate. We develop a general formalism to compute gluon fields in covariant gauge to lowest order in the classical field of the proton and to all orders in the classical field of the nucleus. The use of the covariant gauge makes the diagrammatic interpretation of the solutio...
متن کاملThe effects of gluon depletion on J/ψ suppression in pA and AA collisions
The enhanced suppression of J/ψ production at large xF in pA collisions is studied in the framework of gluon depletion at large x1. The nonperturbative process that modifies the gluon distribution as the gluons propagate in nuclear matter is described by an evolution equation with a kernal to be determined by phenomenology. With nuclear shadowing and anti-shadowing taken into account, the effec...
