چکیده

Two competitive sensations which are produced by a previously described bistable stroboscopic movement display were studied in a series of five experiments. In Experiment 1 each of the movement sensations was selectively adapted, a finding which supports the hypothesis that a different visual process underlies each of the two sensations. In Experiments 2-5 the relative dominance of the two sensations was controlled by the manipulation of five physical stimulus variables-frame duration, duration of the interval between frames, luminance of the interval between frames, contrast of stimulus frames. and degree of dark adaptation. Limiting conditions for the processes mediating the two competitive sensations were elaborated, and the implications of the findings for other studies of stroboscopic movement were discussed. Key Words-apparent movement: bistable percept: perceptual organization; visual motion peraption.

A multistable movement display: evidence for two separate motion systems in human vision.

Two competing sensations of apparent movement were produced by the rapid alternation of two multielement stimulus frames. Either sensation could be made dominant by, appropriate manipulations of the stimulus display. The results suggest that there are two systems capable of generating movement signals in man. One system depends on preliminary processing of form, and the second system does not.

Solving the correspondence problem within the Ternus display: the differential-activation theory.

The Ternus display produces a bistable illusion of motion: at very short interstimulus intervals (ISIs; < 30 ms) observers perceive element motion while at longer ISIs (> 30 ms) observers perceive group motion. In experiment 1, however, we find that, when the Ternus display's ISI contains an occluding box, group motion is mostly eliminated. These results do not fit the predictions made by the s...

Stroboscopic Vision as a Treatment for Retinal Slip Induced Motion Sickness

INTRODUCTION Motion sickness in the general population is a significant problem driven by the increasingly more sophisticated modes of transportation, visual displays, and virtual reality environments. It is important to investigate non-pharmacological alternatives for the prevention of motion sickness for individuals who cannot tolerate the available anti-motion sickness drugs, or who are prec...

A New Single-Display Intelligent Adaptive Interface for Controlling a Group of UAVs

The increasing use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones in different civil and military operations has attracted attention of many researchers and science communities. One of the most notable challenges in this field is supervising and controlling a group or a team of UAVs by a single user. Thereupon, we proposed a new intelligent adaptive interface (IAI) to overcome to this challenge. ...

Attention modulates spatio-temporal grouping

Dynamic stimuli are ubiquitous in natural viewing conditions implying that grouping operations need to operate, not only in space, but also jointly in space and time. Moreover, in natural viewing, attention plays an important role in controlling how resources are allocated. We investigated how attention interacts with spatio-temporal perceptual grouping by using a bistable stimulus, called the ...
