Kinematics of Vega-like stars: lifetimes and temporal evolution of circumstellar dust disks
نویسنده
چکیده
We have used the velocity dispersion as an age indicator to constrain the ages of a large sample of main sequence Vega-like stars in order to study the lifetimes and temporal evolution of the dust disks around them. We use Hipparcos measurements to compute stellar velocities in the sky plane. The velocity dispersion of Vega-like stars is found to be systematically smaller than that of the normal main sequence field stars for all spectral types, suggesting that the main sequence dusty systems, on average, are younger than normal field stars. The debris disks seem to survive longer around late type stars as compared to early type stars. Further, we find a strong correlation between fractional dust luminosity ( fd ≡ Ldust/L⋆) and velocity dispersion of stars with dust disks. Fractional dust luminosity is found to drop off steadily with increasing stellar age from early pre-main sequence phase to late main sequence phase.

متن کاملImaging Circumstellar Debris Disks
In the early 1980s, the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) detected thermal emission from dust grains with temperatures of 50-125 K and fractional luminosities (Lgrains/L∗) in the range 10 -10 around four main sequence stars: Vega, Fomalhaut, β Pictoris, and ǫ Eridani. Coronagraphic observations of β Pic confirmed that the grains do indeed lie in a disk, perhaps associated with a young planeta...
متن کاملA&a Manuscript No. Astronomy and Astrophysics Co in the Circumstellar Disks of Vega and Pictoris
Vega and Pictoris are the most prominent A stars surrounded by dust disks. However up to now CO radio observations have not revealed any gas in the circumstellar environment. We present thin hydrostatic equilibrium models for the disks around these stars using ATLAS9 photospheric models (Kurucz 1992) to determine the stellar UV ux and to derive the dust temperature from radiative equilibrium. D...

متن کاملCandidate Main-sequence Stars with Debris Disks: a New Sample of Vega-like Sources
Vega-like sources are main-sequence stars that exhibit IR Ñuxes in excess of expectations for stellar photospheres, most likely due to reradiation of stellar emission intercepted by orbiting dust grains. We have identiÐed a large sample of main-sequence stars with possible excess IR radiation by crosscorrelating the Michigan Catalog of Two-dimensional Spectral Types for the HD Stars with the IR...
