Detonation Diffraction, Dead Zones and the Ignition-and-growthmodel
نویسنده
چکیده
Of the various macro-scale continuum models of reactive flow in high-energy explosives, the ignition-and-growth model has been the most widely used. Well-resolved computational experiments with the model on corner turning in rigidly confined LX-17 demonstrate that experimentally observed dead zones (sustained regions of chemical inactivity) are not reproduced in the computations. This deficiency is attributed to the fact that the model does not explicitly account for desensitization caused by exposure to shocks of low strength. A modification of the reaction rate that takes account of the desensitization process is proposed. Computations of corner turning with the augmented model show the appearance of dead zones downstream of the corner.

A Study of Detonation Diffraction and Failure for a Model of Compressible Two-Phase Reactive Flow
A two-phase model of heterogeneous explosives, with a reaction rate that is proportional to the gasphase pressure excess above an ignition threshold, is examined computationally. The numerical approach, a variant of Godunov’s method designed to accommodate nonconservative terms in the hyperbolic model, extends previous work of the authors to two-dimensional configurations. The focus is on the b...
متن کاملA Study of Detonation Propagation and Diffraction with Compliant Confinement
Previous computational studies of diffracting detonations with the ignition-and-growth (IG) model demonstrated that contrary to experimental observations, the computed solution did not exhibit dead zones. For a rigidly confined explosive it was found that while diffraction past a sharp corner did lead to a temporary separation of the lead shock from the reaction zone, the detonation re-establis...
متن کاملInfluence of varying timing angle on performance of an SI engine: An experimental and numerical study
Engine performance depends on two main factors of engine speed and ignition time. Ignition timing can affect engine life, fuel economy and engine power. In this paper, to study engine performance of Peugeot 206 TU3A with comparison ratio of 10.5:1 and displacement of 1361CC in MATLAB software, a two-zone burned/unburned model with the fuel burning rate described by aWiebe function was used for ...
متن کاملA Hybrid Two-Phase Mixture Model of Detonation Diffraction with Compliant Confinement
A multi-material two-phase hybrid model of heterogeneous explosives, with a reaction rate that is proportional to the gas-phase pressure excess above an ignition threshold, is examined computationally. The explosive is confined within a compliant inert, and the focus is on the behavior of an established detonation as it rounds a 90◦ corner and undergoes diffraction. The numerical approach, a va...
متن کاملImaging and Analysis of Auto-Ignition and Heavy Knock in a Full Bore Optical SI Engine
The work involved a fundamental study of auto-ignition under unusually high knock intensities for an optical spark ignition engine. The single-cylinder research engine adopted included full bore overhead optical access capable of withstanding continuous peak in-cylinder pressures of up to 150bar. A heavy knock was deliberately induced under relatively low loads using inlet air heating and a pri...
