The Neon Abundance of Galactic Wolf–rayet Stars
نویسندگان
چکیده
The fast, dense winds which characterize Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars obscure their underlying cores, and complicate the verification of evolving core and nucleosynthesis models. Core evolution can be probed by measuring abundances of wind-borne nuclear processed elements, partially overcoming this limitation. Using ground-based mid-infrared spectroscopy and the 12.81μm [Ne ii] emission line measured in four Galactic WR stars, we estimate neon abundances and compare to long-standing predictions from evolved-core models. For the WC star WR121, this abundance is found to be & 11× the cosmic value, in good agreement with predictions. For the three less-evolved WN stars, little neon enhancement above cosmic values is measured, as expected. We discuss the impact of clumping in WR winds on this measurement, and the promise of using metal abundance ratios to eliminate sensitivity to wind density and ionization structure. Neon Abundances from a Spitzer/IRS Survey of Wolf-Rayet Stars
We report on neon abundances derived from Spitzer high resolution spectral data of eight Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars using the forbidden line of [Ne III] 15.56 microns. Our targets include four WN stars of subtypes 4–7, and four WC stars of subtypes 4–7. We derive ion fraction abundances γ of Ne for the winds of each star. The ion fraction abundance is a product of the ionization fraction Qi in stage...
متن کاملSuperbubbles, Wolf-Rayet stars, and the origin of galactic cosmic rays
The abundances of neon and several other isotopic ratios in the galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) have been measured using data from the Cosmic Ray Isotope Spectrometer (CRIS) aboard the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE). We have derived the Ne/Ne ratio at the cosmic-ray source using the measured Ne, F, and O abundances as “tracers” of secondary isotope production. Using this approach, the Ne/Ne ab...

We report the abundances of neon isotopes in the Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) using data from the Cosmic Ray Isotope Spectrometer (CRIS) aboard the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE ). These abundances have been measured for seven energy intervals over the energy range of 84 E /M 273MeV nucleon .We have derived the Ne/Ne ratio at the cosmic-ray source using the measured Ne, F, and O abundances ...
متن کاملOB Associations, Wolf-Rayet Stars, and the Origin of Galactic Cosmic Rays
We have measured the isotopic abundances of neon and a number of other species in the galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) using the Cosmic Ray Isotope Spectrometer (CRIS) aboard the ACE spacecraft. Our data are compared to recent results from two-component (Wolf-Rayet material plus solar-like mixtures) Wolf-Rayet (WR) models. The three largest deviations of galactic cosmic ray isotope ratios from solar...
متن کاملMetallicity in the Galactic Center: The Arches cluster
We present a quantitative spectral analysis of five very massive stars in the Arches cluster, located near the Galactic center, to determine stellar parameters, stellar wind properties and, most importantly, metallicity content. The analysis uses a new technique, presented here for the first time, and uses line-blanketed NLTE wind/atmosphere models fit to high-resolution near-infrared spectra o...
