Biased competition through variations in amplitude of y - oscillations

چکیده
Experiments in visual cortex have shown that the firing rate of a neuron in response to the simultane ous presentation of a preferred and non-preferred stim ulus within the receptive field is interm ediate between that for the two stimuli alone (stimulus competition). A ttention directed to one of the stimuli drives the response towards the response induced by the attended stimulus alone (selective attention). This study shows that a simple feedforward model with fixed synap tic conductance values can reproduce these two phe nomena using synchronization in the gamma-frequency range to increase the effective synaptic gain for the responses to the attended stimulus. The performance of the model is robust to changes in the param eter values. The model predicts that the phase locking between presynaptic input and output spikes increases with attention.

A general framework for dynamic cortical function: the function-through-biased-oscillations (FBO) hypothesis
A central goal of neuroscience is to determine how the brain's relatively static anatomy can support dynamic cortical function, i.e., cortical function that varies according to task demands. In pursuit of this goal, scientists have produced a large number of experimental results and established influential conceptual frameworks, in particular communication-through-coherence (CTC) and gating-by-...
متن کاملEvent-Related Potentials Dissociate Effects of Salience and Space in Biased Competition for Visual Representation
BACKGROUND Selective visual attention is the process by which the visual system enhances behaviorally relevant stimuli and filters out others. Visual attention is thought to operate through a cortical mechanism known as biased competition. Representations of stimuli within cortical visual areas compete such that they mutually suppress each others' neural response. Competition increases with sti...

Overhead transmission lines are influenced by different factors which are mostly electrical and mechanical. These factors can cause problems for lines, distortions in network and outage of line. In designing transmission lines mechanical properties are evaluated after selecting a suitable conductor and clearance with regard to electrical properties. In lines designing, an important mechanical p...

In the vibration of a cracked structure with small amplitude oscillations, the crack necessarily is not fully open or fully closed. Therefore, in order to provide a realistic model for the crack, one should relate the stiffness and damping at the crack location to the amount of the opening of the crack. In this study, a continuous model for vibration of a beam with a fatigue crack under low amp...
