Electron transfer rates and Franck–Condon factors: an application to the early electron transfer steps in photosynthetic reaction centers

چکیده
Mechanistic aspects of some of the early electron transfer steps occurring in photosynthetic reaction centers are discussed. Starting from the normal modes of the redox cofactors involved in the electron transfer processes, we show how a series of quantities which regulate electron transfer rates, such as (i) the electron transfer active modes, (ii) the intramolecular reorganization energy, and (iii) themutual couplings between the vibronic states of the donor and the acceptor, can be obtained and used to draw qualitative conclusions on ET rates.

Electric Field Modulation of Electron Transfer Reaction Rates in Isotropic Systems: Long-Distance Charge Recombination in Photosynthetic Reaction Centers
A general method is demonstrated for experimentally obtaining the rate constant of electron transfer as a function of the free energy of the reaction in nonoriented systems. An external electric field is used to modulate the energy levels of dipolar states and thereby affect the electron-transfer rate. The method is valid for any electron-transfer system which has a fixed distance between the d...
متن کاملDistance Dependence of Electron-Transfer Reactions in Organized Systems: The Role of Superexchange and Non-Condon Effects in Photosynthetic Reaction Centers
Extremely long distance electron transfer is observed in some photosynthetic reaction centers. For several charge recombination reactions, the rate appears to fall off much more slowly with distance than expected from simple models. A general model is proposed for sequential electron-transfer reactions, which often occur in biological systems, in which each ion pair in the forward direction act...
متن کاملA Complete Experimental Assessment of Franck-Condon Structural Effects for an Irreversible Outer-Sphere Electron-Transfer Reaction: Applications of Time-Dependent Raman Scattering Theory to the One-Electron Reduction of 4-Cyano-N-methylpyridinium
A complete experimental description of the vibrational Franck-Condon barrier to the one-electron reduction of 4-cyanoN-methylpyridinium cation (NC-py-CH,+) has been obtained. Because of the chemical irreversibility of the electron transfer, the reaction is not readily amenable to study by conventional structural methods. The approach successfully employed here, however, was a time-dependent ana...
متن کاملSimulation of the electron transfer between the tetraheme subunit and the special pair of the photosynthetic reaction center using a microstate description.
Charge transfer through biological macromolecules is essential for many biological processes such as, for instance, photosynthesis and respiration. Protons or electrons are transferred between titratable residues or redox-active cofactors, respectively. Transfer rates between these sites depend on the current charge configuration of neighboring sites. Here, we formulate the kinetics of charge-t...
متن کاملTheory of the Franck-Condon blockade regime
Strong coupling of electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom entails a low-bias suppression of the current through single-molecule devices, termed the Franck-Condon blockade. In the limit of slow vibrational relaxation, transport in the Franck-Condon-blockade regime proceeds via avalanches of large numbers of electrons, which are interrupted by long waiting times without electron transfer. ...
