Aerodynamic and durational cues of phonological voicing in whisper
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents analyses on the phonological voicing contrast in whispered speech, which is characterized by the absence of vocal fold vibrations. In modal speech, besides glottal vibration, the contrast between voiced and unvoiced consonants is realized by other phonetic correlates: e.g. consonant and pre-consonantal vowel durations, intraoral pressure differences. The analysis of these voicing cues shows they are well preserved in whispered speech. The results are consistent with previous studies supporting the perception of the voicing contrast even without physical voicing. Additionally, the patterns observed for Po during obstruents could reflect constraints connected to competing needs of intelligibility and of discretion in whisper.

Aerodynamic tool for phonology of voicing
The paper addresses the question of the phonetic implementation of phonological voicing in French. It is investigated by means of aerodynamic measures made at the subglottal, glottal and supraglottal stages of the production of fricatives in modal voice and in soft and loud whisper for one speaker. The results show that the [±voice] feature is systematically associated only with the categorical...
متن کاملVoicing assimilation in whispered speech
A large body of literature has shown that phonemic voicing contrasts are preserved in the production and perception of whispered speech. Nevertheless, it is unclear to what extent allophonic voicing is also maintained in whisper. The present study investigates whether a non-contrastive voicing distinction in Spanish fricatives – which results from voice assimilation in obstruent clusters – is a...
متن کاملDurational cues to fricative codas in 2-year-olds' American English: voicing and morphemic factors.
In the process of phonological development, fricatives are generally assumed to be later acquired than stops. However, most of the observational work on which this claim is based has concerned itself with word-initial onset consonants; little is known about how and when fricatives are mastered in word-final coda position (e.g., nose). This is all the more critical in a language like English, wh...
متن کاملAccommodation to the Aerodynamic Voicing Constraint and its Phonological Relevance
The aerodynamic voicing constraint presents the speaker with some physical limits on maintaining voicing during obstruents. Languages‘ phonologies reveal a variety of strategies in the face of this constraint. These strategies raise serious questions about constraints in Optimality Theory (OT).
متن کاملThe phonological voicing contrast in Czech: an EPG study of phonated and whispered fricatives
Czech represents a language with a high correlation between phonological and phonetic voicing, but the perception of the voicing contrast is supported by other phonetic correlates. We employed electropalatography (EPG) to investigate the articulatory correlates of the voicing contrast in phonated and whispered speech. Eight subjects read short sentences and VCV sequences with alveolar/postalveo...
