Low-frequency oscillations in narrow vibrated granular systems

چکیده
We present simulations and a theoretical treatment of vertically vibrated granular media. The systems considered are confined in narrow quasitwo-dimensional and quasi-one-dimensional (column) geometries, where the vertical extension of the container is much larger than both horizontal lengths. The additional geometric constraint present in the column setup frustrates the convection state that is normally observed in wider geometries. This makes it possible to study collective oscillations of the grains with a characteristic frequency that is much lower than the frequency of energy injection. The frequency and amplitude of these oscillations are studied as a function of the energy input parameters and the size of the container. We observe that, in the quasi-two-dimensional setup, low-frequency oscillations are present even in the convective regime. This suggests that they may play a significant role in the transition from a density inverted state to convection. Two models are also presented; the first one, based on Cauchy’s equations, is able to predict with high accuracy the frequency of the particles’ collective motion. This first principles model requires a single input parameter, i.e. the centre of mass of the system. The model shows that a sufficient condition for the existence of the low-frequency mode is an inverted density profile with distinct low and high density regions, 1 Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed. Spontaneous air-driven separation in vertically vibrated fine granular mixtures.
We report the observation of the spontaneous separation of vertically vibrated mixtures of fine bronze and glass spheres of similar diameters. At low frequencies and at sufficient vibrational amplitudes, a sharp boundary forms between a lower region of glass and an upper region of the heavier bronze. The boundary undergoes various oscillations, including periodic tilting motion, but remains ext...
متن کاملSurface Waves and Pattern Formation in Vibrated Granular Beds
We present numerical simulations of surface waves in vibrated granular systems. For the simulations we use an event driven (ED) procedure with a non-constant restitution coeecient. The important advantage of a non-constant restitution coeecient is that it allows to circumvent the \inelastic collapse", i.e. the divergence of collision frequency, usually observed in ED simulations of dense and di...
متن کاملLow Frequency Oscillations Suppression via CPSO based Damping Controller
In this paper, the Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is enhanced with a Chaotic Particle Swarm Optimization (CPSO) Damping Controller in order to mitigate the Low Frequency Oscillations (LFO) in a Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) power system. The designed damping controller is an optimized lead-lag controller, which extracts the speed deviation of the generator rotor and generates the out...
متن کاملDensity-noise power fluctuations in vibrated granular media.
The noise power spectra of the fluctuations in density of a vibrated column of granular material are found to be time dependent. Spectral analysis of these noise power fluctuations shows nontrivial frequency dependences. The noise powers at different frequencies are also found to fluctuate in a partially correlated way. In most instances, the slow variations of the noise are strongly correlated...
متن کاملBottom pressure scaling of vibro-fluidized granular matter
Vibrated granular beds show various interesting phenomena such as convection, segregation, and so on. However, its fundamental physical properties (e.g., internal pressure structure) have not yet been understood well. Thus, in this study, the bottom wall pressure in a vertically vibrated granular column is experimentally measured and used to reveal the nature of granular fluidization. The scali...
