About ENISA The European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) is a centre of network and information security expertise for the EU, its member states, the private sector and Europe's citizens. ENISA works with these groups to develop advice and recommendations on good practice in information security. It assists EU member states in implementing relevant EU legislation and works to improve the resilience of Europe's critical information infrastructure and networks. ENISA seeks to enhance existing expertise in EU member states by supporting the development of cross-border communities committed to improving network and information security throughout the EU. More information about ENISA and its work can be found at Acknowledgements Over the course of this study, we have talked extensively with technical and managerial staff at Internet service providers, network operators, Internet exchange points and research labs. Some of our sources requested that we do not explicitly list their contributions. We therefore collectively thank all our contributors, workshop participants, and participating experts for their valuable input. Executive Summary The interconnection system is the most fundamental building block of the Internet, as it enables independent operators to link up and extend their networks, reaching universal global coverage. Important enough to actually coin the term " Internet " , it is the prerequisite for the availability of the global Internet, as well as other services such as utilities, transport systems, or financial services that now depend on it. The 'Internet interconnection ecosystem' holds together all the Autonomous Systems that make up the Internet. The ecosystem is complex and has …

Resilience of the Internet Interconnection Ecosystem
In 2010 the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) launched a study to investigate the resilience of the Internet’s interconnection system and come up with policy recommendations. A large number of stakeholders were contacted, and their expertise has been reflected in the study. The formal outcome of the study was the publication by ENISA in early 2011 of a detailed technical ...
متن کاملNash-Peering: A New Techno-Economic Framework for Internet Interconnections
The current framework of Internet interconnections, based on transit and settlement-free peering relations, has systemic problems that often cause peering disputes. We propose a new techno-economic interconnection framework called Nash-Peering, which is based on the principles of Nash Bargaining in game theory and economics. Nash-Peering constitutes a radical departure from current interconnect...
متن کاملResilient Cell Resequencing in Terabit Routers
Multistage interconnection networks with internal cell buffering and dynamic routing are among the most cost-effective architectures for multiterabit internet routers. One of the key design issues for such systems is maintaining cell ordering, since cells are subject to varying delays as they pass through the interconnection network. The most flexible and scalable approach to cell resequencing ...
متن کاملInternet Interconnection Economic Model and its Analysis: Peering and Settlement
Peering and transit are two types of Internet interconnection among ISPs. Peering has been a core concept to sustain Internet industry. However, for the past several years, many ISPs broke their peering arrangement because of asymmetric traffic pattern and asymmetric benefit and cost from the peering. Even though traffic flows are not a good indicator of the relative benefit of an Internet inte...
متن کاملRISC: A resilient interconnection network for scalable cluster storage systems
The explosive growth of data generated by information digitization has been identified as the key driver to escalate storage requirements. It is becoming a big challenge to design a resilient and scalable interconnection network which consolidates hundreds even thousands of storage nodes to satisfy both the bandwidth and storage capacity requirements. This paper proposes a Resilient Interconnec...
