Helping Users Get Started with Visual Interfaces: Multi-Layered Interfaces, Integrated Initial Guidance and Video Demonstrations

چکیده
We are investigating new ways to help users learn to use public access interactive tools, in particular for the visual exploration of government statistics. Our work led to a series of interfaces using multi-layered design, a new help method called Integrated Initial Guidance, and video demonstrations. Multi-layer designs structure an interface so that a simpler interface is available for users to get started and more complex features are accessed as users move through the more advanced layers. Integrated Initial Guidance provides help within the working interface, right at the start of the application. Using the metaphor of “sticky notes” overlaid on top of the functional interface locates the main widgets, demonstrates their manipulation, and explains the resulting actions using preset activations of the interface.

متن کاملSelecting and Extracting Effective Features of SSVEP-based Brain-Computer Interface
User interfaces are always one of the most important applied and study fields of information technology. The development and expansion of cognitive science studies and functionalization of its tools such as BCI1, as well as popularization of methods such as SSVEP2 to stimulate brain waves, have led to using these techniques every day, especially in appropriate solutions for physically and menta...
متن کاملLayered software architecture for designing environmental sounds in non-visual interfaces
This paper presents a partially implemented layered software architecture for describing and designing environmental sounds (everyday sounds) in non visual interfaces based on a new sound model (audio framework). This architecture facilitates non-speech audio presentation of objects and interaction mechanisms to non visual interfaces. Physical layer, system sound software layer, sound analyser/...
متن کاملAround the World in Seconds with Speed-Dependent Automatic Zooming
Speed-dependent automatic zooming (SDAZ) interfaces allow rapid navigation through large visual information spaces by automatically zooming out when the user moves quickly through the dataspace. We have implemented a variety of SDAZ interfaces that provide compelling mapbased demonstrations of the technique. In particular, our ‘globe browser’ demonstrates fluid and rapid navigation that fluidly...
متن کاملEEG Based Brain Computer Interface Hand Grasp Control: Feature Extraction Method MTCSP
Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) are communication systems, which enable users to send commands to computers by using brain activity only; this activity being generally measured by Electroencephalography (EEG). BCIs are generally designed according to a pattern recognition approach, i.e., by extracting features from EEG signals, and by using a classifier to identify the user’s mental state from...
