Inapproximability Results for Wavelength Assignment in WDM Optical Networks
نویسنده
چکیده
We address the issue of inapproximability of the wavelength assignment problem in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks. We prove that in an n-node WDM optical network with m lightpaths and maximum load L, if NP = ZPP, for any constant δ > 0, no polynomial time algorithm can achieve approximation ratio n1/2−δ or m1−δ , where NP is the class of problems which can be solved by nondeterministic polynomial time algorithms, and ZPP is the class of problems that can be solved by polynomial randomized algorithms with zero probability of error. Furthermore, the above result still holds even when L = 2. We also prove that no algorithm can guarantee the number of wavelengths to be less than ( √ n/2)L or (m/2)L. This is the first time inapproximability results are established for the wavelength assignment problem in WDM optical networks. We also notice the following fact, namely, there is a polynomial time algorithm for wavelength assignment which achieves approximation ratio of O(m(log logm)/(logm)). Therefore, the above lower bound of m1−δ is nearly tight.

A Novel Protection Guaranteed, Quality of Transmission Aware Routing and Wavelength Assignment Algorithm for All-optical Networks
Transparent All Optical Networks carry huge traffic and any link failure can cause the loss of gigabits of data; hence protection and its guarantee becomes necessary at the time of failure. Many protection schemes were presented in the literature, but none of them speaks about protection guarantee. Also, in all optical networks, due to absence of regeneration capabilities, the physical layer i...
متن کاملAn Algorithm for Waveband Routing and Wavelength Assignment in Hierarchical WDM Mesh Networks
Aggregation of wavelengths into wavebands is an attractive, cost-efficient way to facilitate switching and routing in optical networks. In this paper, we study the waveband routing and wavelength assignment (WRWA) tasks in hierarchical WDM mesh networks with optical crossconnects that can route multiple granularity (wavelengths and wavebands) at the same time. We solve the waveband routing and ...

With wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) several optical signals can be transferred in a single optical ber [6][7]. This technology allows more e cient use of the huge capacity of an optical ber but also poses new network design and management problems, especially when wavelength conversion is not possible in the nodes. In this paper we consider the routing and wavelength assignment problem ...
