چکیده

The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of dust-enshrouded galaxies with powerful restframe farinfrared(IR) emission have been constrained by a range of ground-based and space-borne surveys. The IRAS catalog provides a reasonably complete picture of the dust emission from nearby galaxies (redshift z ≃ 0.1) that are typically less luminous than about 10 L⊙. However, at higher redshifts, the observational coverage from all existing far-IR and submillimeter(submm) surveys is much less complete. Here we investigate the SEDs of a new sample of high-redshift submm-selected galaxies (SMGs), for which redshifts are known, allowing us to estimate reliable luminosities and characteristic dust temperatures. We demonstrate that a wide range of SEDs is present in the population, and that a substantial number of luminous dusty galaxies with hotter dust temperatures could exist at similar redshifts (z ≃ 2− 3), but remain undetected in existing submm surveys. These hotter galaxies could be responsible for about a third of the extragalactic IR background radiation at a wavelength of about 100μm. The brightest of these galaxies would have far-IR luminosities of order 10 L⊙ and dust temperatures of order 60K. Galaxies up to an order of magnitude less luminous with similar SEDs will be easy to detect and identify in the deepest Spitzer Space Telescope (Spitzer) observations of extragalactic fields at 24μm. A POPULATION OF HOT, DUSTY ULTRALUMINOUS GALAXIES AT z 2

We report spectroscopic redshifts for 18 Jy radio galaxies at a mean redshift of z 1⁄4 2:2 that are faint at both submillimeter and optical wavelengths. While the radio fluxes of these galaxies could indicate far-IR luminosities comparable to high-redshift submillimeter-selected galaxies (k10 L ), none are detected in the submillimeter. We propose that this new population of galaxies represents...

Aegis: a Panchromatic Study of Irac-selected Extremely Red Objects with Confirmed Spectroscopic Redshifts

We study 87 Extremely Red Objects (EROs), selected both to have color redder than R−[3.6] = 4.0, and to have confirmed spectroscopic redshifts. Together, these two constraints result in this sample populating a fairly narrow redshift range at 0.76 < z < 1.42. The key new ingredient included here is deep Spitzer Space Telescope InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) data. Based on [3.6]− [8.0] color, we d...

Infrared Luminosities and Dust Properties of Z ≈ 2 Dust-obscured Galaxies

We present SHARC-II 350μm imaging of twelve 24μm-bright (F24μm > 0.8 mJy) Dust-Obscured Galaxies (DOGs) and CARMA 1mm imaging of a subset of 2 DOGs. These objects are selected from the Boötes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. Detections of 4 DOGs at 350μm imply infrared (IR) luminosities which are consistent to within a factor of 2 of expectations based on a warm dust spectral energy di...

Far-infrared constraints on the contamination by dust-obscured galaxies of high-z dropout searches

The spectral energy distributions (SED) of dusty galaxies at intermediate redshift may look similar to very high-redshift galaxies in the optical/near infrared (NIR) domain. This can lead to the contamination of high-redshift galaxy searches based on broad-band optical/NIR photometry by lower redshift dusty galaxies because both kind of galaxies cannot be distinguished. The contamination rate c...
