چکیده

Burstiness in data traffic is emerging as a critical property that protocol analysis can no longer ignore. To preserve the kind of burstiness or scaling phenomena observed in aggregated TCP traffic, we develop a behavioral model that captures TCP’s windowbased and closed-loop control. Through a novel modeling technique – exhaustive state exploration, we systematically examine each TCP states over a restricted range of connection length and packet loss. This restricted range covers the TCP behavior most common to web exchanges. When connections step outside this range we preserve simulation accuracy by taking an abstraction fault and changing to a more detailed model. By counting packets with interarrival times falling into certain critical intervals – round trip time (RTT) or retransmission timeout (RTO), we are able to create finite state automaton (FSA) with states and transitions indicating rounds of back-to-back packet transmissions. We demonstrate that an FSA approximation of TCP can produce light-weight simulation models of TCP suitable for background traffic, and that these models accurately reproduce multifractal scaling behavior in IP network traffic.

A Burstiness Control for TCP

In this paper, we propose a two-layer model for TCP traffic with burstiness effect. We show that the backlog in bottleneck queue is bounded by the sum of two components: the long term effect of congestion window control algorithm and the short term effect of burstiness. This motivates a formal definition of burstiness. A simple algorithm is proposed to measure and control burstiness at the send...

The Adverse Impact of the TCP Congestion-Control Mechanism in Heterogeneous Computing Systems

Via experimental study, we illustrate how TCP modulates application traffic in such a way as to adversely affect network performance in a heterogeneous computing system. Even when aggregate application traffic smooths out as more applications’ traffic are multiplexed, TCP induces burstiness into the aggregate traffic load, and thus hurts network performance. This burstiness is particularly bad ...

Transmission Timer Approach for Rate Based Pacing TCP with Hardware Support

Transmission timer framework is proposed for rate based pacing (RBP) TCP, in order to mitigate a burstiness in TCP slow-start. In this approach, host software specifies the time for each packet that should be sent out, and gives a precise interframe gap for the data stream. An RBP TCP implementation including a transmission timer aware network interface card is demonstrated. Also, a quantitativ...

Queuing dynamics and single-link stability of delay-based window congestion control

Accurate modeling of queueing dynamics is important in the design and analysis of Internet congestion control. However, as demonstrated in this paper, existing window-based queueing models [26,30] are often not capable of precisely capturing the transient behavior (i.e., self-clocking and burstiness) of TCP-like protocols and their resulting analysis may be inaccurate in practice. As one exampl...

New geometry for TCP: severe plastic deformation of tubes

Since tubes are widely used for different industrial applications, processing of tubes by the Severe Plastic Deformation (SPD) method has been the target of different attempts. Among these attempts, development of SPD processes for tubes based on Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) has been more successful. As an illustration, Tube Channel Pressing (TCP) has been presented as an attractive SP...
