چکیده

Five planetary nebulae (PNe) have been discovered in the nearby dwarf irregular galaxy. Emission line images were obtained using the Wide Field Camera of the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) at La Palma (Spain). The candidate PNe were identified by their pointlike appearance and relatively strong [O iii] emission-line fluxes. They are located within a galactocentric distance of 2.8 arcmin, corresponding to 1.1 kpc at the distance of Sextans B. Luminosities are in the range 1800–5600L⊙. Sextans B is one of the smallest dwarf irregular galaxies with a PN population. The number of PNe detected suggest an enhanced star formation rate between 1 and 5 Gyr ago.

Astronomy & Astrophysics The temperature structure of dusty planetary nebulae

We have analyzed the effects of photoelectric heating by dust grains in photoionization models of planetary nebulae. We have shown that this process is particularly important if planetary nebulae contain a population of small grains. The presence of such grains would solve a number of problems that have found no satisfactory solution so far: i) the thermal energy deficit in some objects inferre...

The O/H metallicity distribution of different samples of planetary nebulae in the bulge of the Milky Way and M31 are compared. O/H abundances are converted into [Fe/H] metallicity by the use of theoretical [O/Fe] × [Fe/H] relationships both for the bulge and the solar neighbourhood. It is found that these relationships imply an offset of [Fe/H] abundances by a factor up to 0.5 dex for bulge neb...

Close Binaries as the Progenitors of the Brightest Planetary Nebulae

We investigate the possible progenitors of the planetary nebulae (PNs) which populate the top 0.5 mag of the [O III] λ5007 planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF). We show that the absolute luminosity of the PNLF cutoff demands that the central stars of these most luminous planetaries be & 0.6M⊙, and that such high-mass PN cores must exist in every galaxy. We also use the bolometricluminosi...
