چکیده

This report describes the design and construction of a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM). A Scanning Tunneling Microscope is a relatively new instrument in the field of surface science and has the capability of atomic resolution of surfaces. This report presents some background theory pertinent to the understanding of the STM. Theories of electron tunnefing, STM operation, and control theory are all briefly covered. This report also presents the mechanical and electrical designs used in the construction of the STM. Some historical developments are illustrated to justify design choices. Both the mechanical and electrical designs are described in detail. Also presented in this report are some results obtained during the design and construction of the STM. The imaging capabilities of the STM is presented with the images of different surfaces: a machined surface, an epitax_ially grown monocrystal of gold~ and graphite.

Construction of a Low Temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscope

JacobTosado July 22, 2004 This paper discusses work I have done with the construction of a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope (LTSTM) and the operation of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). A brief description to why a LTSTM is used and the background concerning that description, is covered. Mainly methods in STM imaging are described giving insight into two possible sources of i...

Effects of Temperature on Radiative Properties of Nanoscale Multilayer with Coherent Formulation in Visible Wavelengths

During the past two decades, there have been tremendous developments in near-field imaging and local probing techniques. Examples are the Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM), Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), Near-field Scanning Optical Microscope (NSOM), Photon Scanning Tunneling Microscope (PSTM), and Scanning Thermal Microscope (SThM).Results showed that the average reflectance for a dopant con...

Manipulating, Reacting, and Constructing Single Molecules with a Scanning Tunneling Microscope Tip

The fascinating advances in atom and molecule manipulation with the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip allow scientists to fabricate artificial atomic scale structures, to study local quantum phenomena, or to probe physical and chemical properties of single atoms and molecules on surfaces. Recent achievements in individual synthesis of single molecules with the STM tip further open up an e...

A 30 mK, 13.5 T scanning tunneling microscope with two independent tips.

We describe the design, construction, and performance of an ultra-low temperature, high-field scanning tunneling microscope (STM) with two independent tips. The STM is mounted on a dilution refrigerator and operates at a base temperature of 30 mK with magnetic fields of up to 13.5 T. We focus on the design of the two-tip STM head, as well as the sample transfer mechanism, which allows in situ t...

A 350 mK, 9 T scanning tunneling microscope for the study of superconducting thin films on insulating substrates and single crystals.

We report the construction and performance of a low temperature, high field scanning tunneling microscope (STM) operating down to 350 mK and in magnetic fields up to 9 T, with thin film deposition and in situ single crystal cleaving capabilities. The main focus lies on the simple design of STM head and a sample holder design that allows us to get spectroscopic data on superconducting thin films...
