چکیده

This paper discusses architectural aspects of various versions of bidirectional OT so far proposed, and their treatments of blocking and other phenomena involving asymmetric relationships between form and meaning. The models to be studied here are the strong and weak bidirectional OT of Blutner (2000), and the asymmetric OT model of Wilson (2001). We show that each of these models provides at best a partial solution to the problems of form-meaning asymmetries. We argue that some of the problems of existing OT models can be eliminated using a variant of system which performs only one iteration of the Weak OT process.

Optimality-Theoretic Pragmatics Meets Experimental Pragmatics

The main concern of this article is to discuss some recent findings concerning the psychological reality of optimality-theoretic pragmatics and its central part – bidirectional optimization. A present challenge is to close the gap between experimental pragmatics and neo-Gricean theories of pragmatics. I claim that OT pragmatics helps to overcome this gap, in particular in connection with the di...

Optimal and Non-Optimal Interpretations in the Acquisition of Dutch Past Tenses

An aspectual comprehension experiment with Dutch learners reveals an asymmetry in their understanding of the Present Perfect on the one hand versus the Imperfective Past and Periphrastic Past Progressive on the other. Dutch 2 and 3-year-olds have acquired the completion entailment of the Perfect, but do not properly restrict their interpretation of the Imperfective Past and Periphrastic Past Pr...

Some Experimental Aspects of Optimality-Theoretic Pragmatics

The article has three main concerns: (i) it gives a concise introduction into optimality-theoretic pragmatics; (ii) it discusses the relation to alternative accounts (relevance theory and Levinson's theory of presumptive meanings); (iii) it reviews recent findings concerning the psychological reality of optimality-theoretic pragmatics and its central part concept – bidirectional optimization. A...

Unfaithful conduct : A competence - based explanation of asymmetries between production and comprehension

Children’s production skills in their native language do not always develop in tandem with their comprehension skills. In some cases, children’s comprehension is adult-like, while their production is still poor. In other cases, the situation is the other way around and children’s production is adult-like, while their comprehension is still poor. Optimality Theory is able to provide a competence...

On compositionality and bidirectional optimization

In this paper we revisit the semantic principle of compositionality and argue that compositionality is bidirectional optimization. Underspecification approaches to natural language interpretation generally start with an underspecified or weak meaning, which is strengthened by contextual information. By contrast, the bidirectional optimization approach we advocate proceeds from the strongest pos...
