چکیده

T metal complexes, and particularly ruthenium polypyridine complexes, can be used as catalysts or photocatalysts capable of performing water oxidation [1] or oxidation of organic compounds.[2,3] They can also be used as chromophores to harvest solar energy due to their absorption in the visible region. Therefore, understanding the nature of the electronic excited states in transition-metal complexes is crucially important for elucidation of the mechanistic details of the photocatalyst function and design of efficient molecular devices for solar energy conversion.

Photoinduced energy transfer processes within dyads of metallophthalocyanines compactly fused to a ruthenium(II) polypyridine chromophore.

An unsymmetric, peripherally octasubstituted phthalocyanine (Pc) 1, which contains a combination of dipyrido[3,2-f:2',3'-h] quinoxaline and 3,5-di-tert-butylphenoxy substituents, has been obtained via a statistical condensation reaction of two corresponding phthalonitriles. Synthetic procedures for the selective metalation of the macrocyclic cavity and the periphery of 1 were developed, leading...

Interfacial electron transfer in TiO(2) surfaces sensitized with Ru(II)-polypyridine complexes.

Studies of interfacial electron transfer (IET) in TiO(2) surfaces functionalized with (1) pyridine-4-phosphonic acid, (2) [Ru(tpy)(tpy(PO(3)H(2)))](2+), and (3) [Ru(tpy)(bpy)(H(2)O)-Ru(tpy)(tpy(PO(3)H(2)))](4+) (tpy = 2,2':6,2''-terpyridine; bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) are reported. We characterize the electronic excitations, electron injection time scales, and interfacial electron transfer (IET) me...

Towards the development of functionalized polypyridine ligands for Ru(II) complexes as photosensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).

A number of novel ruthenium(II) polypyridine complexes have been designed and synthesized for use as photosensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) due to their rich photophysical properties such as intense absorption, long-lived lifetimes, high emission quantum yields and unique redox characteristics. Many of these complexes exhibit photophysical behavior that can be readily controlled...

Mechanistic insights into electrocatalytic CO2 reduction within [Ru(II)(tpy)(NN)X]n+ architectures.

A series of Ru(II)-polypyridyl complexes of the design [Ru(II)(tpy)(NN)X](n+) (tpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine; NN = bidentate polypyridine; X = Cl(-) or CH3CN; n = 1 or 2) have been synthesized and analyzed for their ability to function as electrocatalysts in the reduction of CO2 to CO. Varying the electron-donating/withdrawing character of the NN polypyridyl ligand has allowed for modification ...

Light-induced charge separation and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water using Ru(II)Pt(II)-based molecular devices: effects of introducing additional donor and/or acceptor sites.

In our hopes to improve the photocatalytic efficiency of photo-hydrogen-evolving molecular devices, several new dyads and triads possessing a photosensitizing Ru(bpy)(phen)(2)(2+) (or Ru(phen)(3)(2+)) chromophore (abbreviated as Ru(II)) attached to both/either a phenothiazine moiety (abbreviated as Phz) and/or H(2)-evolving PtCl(2)(bpy) units (abbreviated as Pt), such as Phz-Ru(II)-Pt2 (triad),...
