Comparison of Speed-up Techniques for Simulation

چکیده

Due to increased complexity and extreme quality of service requirements, traditional means for performance evaluation of telecom networks do not always suffice. The most flexible approach has been, and still is, simulation, which is the main focus of this paper. However, severe problems regarding efficiency exist, e.g. evaluation of ATM cell loss rate in range of <10-9 which is very computer intensive and hardly feasible within reasonable time with direct simulation. This calls for new and more efficient simulation techniques. A short overview of some speed-up approaches is given. This paper compare three of the most promising techniques within the rare event provoking approach; importance sampling, RESTART and transition splitting. They have all demonstrated significant speed-ups over direct simulation. An experiment is carried out by the three techniques on the same system example, and the comparison measure takes into account both the variability in the estimates and the CPU time consumption.

Numerical and analytical investigation of an ultrasonic assisted ECAP process

One of the great challenges in the processing of materials using Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) is the high forming forces required to produce large shear deformation in the material. Researchers show that the friction forces between the die and the sample constitute a great part of the total forming forces. Recently, ultrasonic vibrations are successfully implemented into the ECAP proce...

A Comparison of the Effect of Warm-up Techniques on the Speed and Accuracy of Simulating Using Shorter SimPoints. Motivations

Investigation into new computer-architectural features relies heavily on cycle-accurate simulation tools such as SimpleScalar [1], the use of which, in order to deliver the quality of information desired, is compute intensive and time-consuming. At the heart of most approaches to speed up simulation is a reduction in the portion of executed code to be simulated in such high detail. However, as ...
