چکیده

We study the properties of hot gaseous halos in 10 nearby ultraluminous IRAS galaxies observed with the ACIS instrument on board Chandra. For all sample galaxies, diffuse soft X-ray emissions are found within ∼ 10 kpc of the central region; their spectra are well fitted by a MEKAL model plus emission lines from α-elements and other ions. The temperature of the hot gas is about 0.7 keV and metallicity is about 1Z⊙. Outside the central region, extended hot gaseous halos are found for nine out of the ten ULIRGs. Most spectra of these extended halos can be fitted with a MEKAL model with a temperature of about 0.6 keV and a low metallicity (Z ∼ 0.1Z⊙). We discuss the implications of our results on the origin of X-ray halos in elliptical galaxies and the feedback processes associated with starbursts. Subject headings: galaxies: evolution – galaxies: starburst – galaxies: interactions – galaxies: ISM –galaxies: ellipticals

Hot Gaseous Halos in Early Type Galaxies

The hot gas in early type galaxies (ETGs) plays a crucial role in their formation and evolution. As the hot gas is often extended to the outskirts beyond the optical size, the large scale structural features identified by Chandra (including cavities, cold fronts, filaments, and tails) point to key evolutionary mechanisms, e.g., AGN feedback, merging history, accretion/stripping, as well as star...

The Hot Gas Halos of Galaxies in Groups

We use Chandra observations of 13 nearby groups of galaxies to investigate the hot gas content of their member galaxies. We find that a large fraction of nearIR bright, early-type galaxies in groups have extended X-ray emission, indicating that they retain significant hot gas halos even in these dense environments. In particular, we detect hot gas halos in ∼80% of LK > L∗ galaxies. We do not fi...

Recent results on the radio emission from galaxy clusters are reviewed, with emphasis both on the radio galaxies and on the diffuse radio emission from the intracluster medium. We show that the formation of the tailed morphology in cluster radio galaxies is due to the effect of the cluster gaseous environment and of its large scale motions in merging clusters. From Chandra X-ray data, it has al...

We discuss two themes from Chandra observations of galaxies, groups, and clusters. First, we review the merging process as seen through the high angular resolution of Chandra. We present examples of sharp, edge-like surface brightness structures " cold fronts " , the boundaries of the remaining cores of merger components and the Chandra observations of CL0657, the first clear example of a stron...
