چکیده

Our response to the questions posed to this panel is influenced by a number of beliefs (or biasesl) which we h a v e d e v e l o p e d i n t h e c o u r s e o f b u i l d i n g and a n a l y z i n ~ the operation of several natural language understanding (NLU) systems. [I, 2, 3, 12] While the emphasis of the panel i~ on parslnK, we feel that the recovery of the syntactic structure of a natural lan~unKe utterance must be viewed as part of a larger process of reeoverlnK the meaning, intentions and goals underlying its generation. Hence it is inappropriate to consider designing or evaluatln~ natural language parsers or Erem,~ra without taking into account the architecture of the whole ~LU system of which they're a part. Six Topics in Search of a Parser: An Overview of AI Language Research

My purpose in this paper is to give an overview of natural language understanding work within artificial intelligence (AI). 1 will concentrate on the problem of parsing going from natural language input to a semantic representation. Naturally, the form of semantic representation is a factor in such discussions, so it will receive some attention as well. Furthermore. 1 doubt that parsing can be ...

An improved joint model: POS tagging and dependency parsing

Dependency parsing is a way of syntactic parsing and a natural language that automatically analyzes the dependency structure of sentences, and the input for each sentence creates a dependency graph. Part-Of-Speech (POS) tagging is a prerequisite for dependency parsing. Generally, dependency parsers do the POS tagging task along with dependency parsing in a pipeline mode. Unfortunately, in pipel...

Session 5: Natural Language, Discourse

The papers in this group cover a broad range of topics from different perspectives. They have in common an emphasis on the handling of frequently-occurring phenomena in real data sets of spoken and written language, phenomena which are in some sense outside of the scope of some of the core problems in human language technologies. We can view problems such as acoustic processing, word recognitio...

Learning Semantic Parsers for Natural Language Understanding

For building question answering systems and natural language interfaces, semantic parsing has emerged as an important and powerful paradigm. Semantic parsers map natural language into logical forms, the classic representation for many important linguistic phenomena. The modern twist is that we are interested in learning semantic parsers from data, which introduces a new layer of statistical and...

A View of Parsing

The questions before this panel presuppose a distinction between parsing and interpretation. There are two other simple and obvious distinctions that I think are necessary for a reasonable discussion of the issues. First, we must clearly distinguish between the static specification of a process and its dynamic execution. Second, we must clearly distinguish two purposes that a natural language p...

Invited Talk: The Case for Universal Dependencies

Universal Dependencies is a recent initiative to develop a linguistically informed, cross-linguistically consistent dependency grammar analysis and treebanks for many languages, with the goal of enabling multilingual natural language processing applications of parsing and natural language understanding. I outline the needs behind the initiative and how some of the design principles follow from ...
