Red cell distribution width, mean platelet volume, and vitamin B12 levels in patients with schizophrenia: an observational study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Objectives: Increasing evidence suggests an association between inflammation and schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to evaluate vitamin B12, mean platelet volume (MPV) and red cell distribution width (RDW) levels in patients with schizophrenia. Materials and methods: Fifty-six patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and 30 ageand sex-matched controls were included in the study. Serum B12, MPV and RDW levels were measured in all patients. Results: RDW levels were significantly higher in patients with schizophrenia than in the controls (P<0.001). MPV levels were increased in patients with schizophrenia; however, this increase was not statistically significant (P>0.05). Serum B12 levels were significantly lower in patients with schizophrenia than controls (P<0.001). Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that schizophrenic patients had high RDW and MPV levels along with decreased B12 levels. Increased inflammation may play a pathophysiological role in the development of atherosclerosis in schizophrenic patients.

Investigating the Relationship between Red Blood Cell Distribution Width and Early Detection of Colorectal Cancer and Colonic Polyps
Background: Colorectal cancer is a common cancer and has a high rate of mortality and morbidity. This can be reduced by screening tests. Some of the studies have recently referred to Red Cell Distribution Width (RDW) as a marker for early detection of various cancers. The aim of this study was to investigate the RDW and early detection of colorectal cancer and polyp. M...
متن کاملRelation of mean platelet volume and red blood cell distribution width with epistaxis.
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Mean platelet volume is the measurement of the average size of platelets in the blood, and red blood cell distribution width is the variability of the size of red blood cells in circulation. This study aimed to investigate if there was any relationship between mean platelet volume, red blood cell distribution, and epistaxis. STUDY DESIGN Prospective controlled trial. M...
متن کاملIn reference to Relation of mean platelet volume and red blood cell distribution width with epistaxis.
We applaud the work by Kemal et al., in their well-presented article. The authors found lower mean platelet volume (MPV) and red blood cell distribution (RDW) levels in epistaxis. It is worth noting that any process resulting in the release of immature erythrocyte/platelet or increased destruction of red blood cell/platelet will change the levels of RDW/MPV. Moreover, it has been reported that ...
متن کاملIn response to: Relation of mean platelet volume and red blood distribution width with epistaxis.
We would like to thank Dr. Xia Feng, Dr. Libing Jiang, and their friends for their insightful and valuable comments on our article. First of all, there was no parameter such as red cell distribution width (RDW)/mean platelet volume (MPV) in our study. We discussed RDW and MPV as independent parameters. We were aware that anemia, renal dysfunction, hepatic dysfunction, thyroid disease, transfusi...
متن کاملRed blood cell distribution width is worthwhile when interpreted with other inflammatory markers
In a recent issue of Journal of Geriatric Cardiology, we read the article by LIU, et al. with interest. They aimed to investigate whether red cell distribution width (RDW) had a relationship with mortality in elderly patients after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The authors concluded that, RDW is an independent predictor of the increased intermediate-term all-cause mortality in elder...
