A spline-based adaptive filter for the removal of blocking artifacts in image sequences coded at very low bitrate

چکیده
In this paper, a method for the reduction of blocking eeect in image sequences coded at very low bitrate is presented. The proposed operator is capable of adapting its behaviour to the local characteristics of the images. In areas containing details, the degradation introduced by block-based coding is often masked by the texture itself and a satisfactory visual eeect can be achieved by simply leaving the area unchanged. In uniform areas, instead, the coarse quantization { normally used at very low bitrate{ results in visible steps in the gray level. A local action along the border is not suucient for the removal of the artifact (specially when the frames are later viewed in a sequence). In this case, a spline interpolation is performed on the gray levels of pixels located on a wider area across the border. The extension of the ltered zone inside the blocks is evaluated by means of an index of activity so as to maximize the smoothing eeect, while preserving the details inside the blocks.

New adaptive interpolation schemes for efficient meshbased motion estimation
Motion estimation and compensation is an essential part of existing video coding systems. The mesh-based motion estimation (MME) produces smoother motion field, better subjective quality (free from blocking artifacts), and higher peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) in many cases, especially at low bitrate video communications, compared to the conventional block matching algorithm (BMA). Howev...
متن کاملBlocking artifacts removal by a hybrid filter method
Blocking artifacts are the visual artifacts found at block boundaries of DCT-based compressed images. The blocking artifacts removal method in this paper simultaneously performs an edge-preserving and a low-pass filtering of the degraded image. The deblocked result is then constructed from a soft blending of the two filtered outputs. The novel contribution here is the soft blending that avoids ...

Removing salt and pepper noise is an active research area in image processing. In this paper, a two-phase method is proposed for removing salt and pepper noise while preserving edges and fine details. In the first phase, noise candidate pixels are detected which are likely to be contaminated by noise. In the second phase, only noise candidate pixels are restored using adaptive median filter. In...
متن کاملCombined Frequency and Spatial Domain Algorithm for the Removal of Blocking Artifacts
A novel combined frequency and spatial domain method is presented in this paper for blockiness reduction for low bit rate compressed images. The method consists of two stages: in the first, better estimates of the reconstructed DCT coefficients are obtained based on their observed probability distribution. In the second, an efficient postprocessing scheme consisting of a region classification a...
متن کاملDeblocking Joint Photographic Experts Group Compressed Images via Self-learning Sparse Representation
JPEG is one of the most widely used image compression method, but it causes annoying blocking artifacts at low bit-rates. Sparse representation is an efficient technique which can solve many inverse problems in image processing applications such as denoising and deblocking. In this paper, a post-processing method is proposed for reducing JPEG blocking effects via sparse representation. In this ...
